Best earbuds for riding?

Should I go Bluetooth?

I need something to replace my apple headphones, they broke. Any recommendations based off the following?

-no rubber sealed fit, I need to hear
-controls on the cable, near chest/chin
-fit well under goggle strap over ear (can’t be bulky)


Basically need knock off apple headphones

Just get apple headphones again. Or flex on everyone and get airpods. The apple headphones fit the ear the nicest imo

I cant speak for all blutooth phones but my skullcandy wireless get too cold after a couples hours and shut off. I just use whatever $20 dollar wired pair looks the comfiest (skullcandy method) and if I need to hear around me I'll wear one or put em in my ear crooked

I have the Bose soundsport wireless and they are made for sports/jogging so they are designed to be able to hear while listening. They are a little bulky as far as earphones but they fit well under my BlackStrap bala. Highly recommend. I think $10 cheaper than air pods but with these you get a wire that connects the two earbuds so you wont lose them.

I broke them riding. I used them for 1 week total and then cable end was getting bend around too much. I’ll just get another. I had them in a bad spot because I wasn’t wearing a jackets

I bought air pods specifically for skiing so I could take my phone out easier for pictures, texting, picking songs, etc. but I realized if they fall our you'll literally never find them so I just kept using the wired apples ones. I'd recommend just sticking with what works

I got a smith maze, without ear flaps, and it still gets in the way. The size of the buds are awkward shaped

EDIT: I don't hate Apple (other than their OS and junk products like Beats) but their stock Earpods are SHIT and the Airpods don't sound great but they are really good for portability, the way the connect with Apple products, and their battery life/the case's battery life. Also I own a pair and hardly use them now as I'd rather use wired headphones that sound 100000x better. I especially prefer wired ones when skiing because you WILL lose your airpods unless you are just riding some tame groomers. Even then I don't trust riding with true wireless earbuds that are TINY and WHITE in the SNOW. They also just sound generic AF. I'm usually skiing with a pair of Shures now or when I don't want to risk breaking something that nice I use my Klipsch buds that I got for like $20.


OP: Go to reddit.com/r/headphones and ask there. These people recommending junk Bluetooth and generic Apple Earpods that come with your phone aren't right. They work but brands like Sennheiser, Hifiman, Shure, etc. are way better. I'm a Sennheiser and Shure fanboy but there are other great brands. You can look at other audiophile websites other than r/headphones as well.

I just got a klipsch wireless subwoofer not too long ago! However, I am not getting into higher end audio for riding park. Just need some background music while I focus and chat with friends. I also am pretty rough on all accessories, I’d destroy them just like my apple headphones. I’ll check out the link though, thanks.

Those are too bulky to fit under goggle strap. They also have a rubber seal for the ear with sound canceling. I know where to get the best headphones, I just need a “skiing pair”.

seriously though, icons are the shit because they’re cheap, loud as fuck, have cable volume control, stick on your head well, can be worn over/under goggs, or around the back of the helmet.

its also probably THE defining accessory of late 2000s/early 2010s skiing, and will pair perfectly with your crowbars and salomon g-suit ;)

I really really don't like apple, but I've never used a pair of earbud I like more for skiing than apple earbuds with a mic. If you're with friends you can keep them in and still talk to people, but if Im alone I use the ones that came with my samsung because they block out basically all noise and you're in your own world completely, you just can't hear people talk to you.

I use normal Bose soundsports, not the wireless ones. Pretty small and they are designed to stay in your ear when moving around. Super reliable in cold weather and the open air design means I can still hear my surroundings which is nice.

The Icon wireless are pretty decent. Charged them for about an hour yesterday in my car and rode with them for 7 hours on the hill. Only downfall is they probably wouldn't work too well with a helmet.

They might have died in the pow today. Have had them out in the deep before. Will try them again tomorrow, maybe my phone was fucking out but it said full volume but could barely hear em.

Everyone mass downvoting me is a moron. I'm super into audio stuff and I know what I am talking about. I didn't know OP was looking for something cheap. Whatever you do please don't buy Skullcandy. It's the worst junk on the market and it's marketed towards little kids. I worked at Best Buy when I was in college and EVERYONE had to do warranty claims on them as they fall apart and blow. I've never had that happen to decent headphones... ever. I've also tried their whole product line and they are complete trash until you spend like $200-300 and even those are worse than most $50 cans from reputable companies. Skiers are suckers for their products because Skullcandy used to sponsor skiers and they'd see their logos everywhere.

These are by far the best CHEAP earbuds you can buy. People rave about them on audiophile websites and they are DIRT CHEAP (like $6 USD). I posted the Amazon link but you can find them on other websites cheaper (less than $5)

The thing you forget about the shitty apple earbuds is that everyone already has them laying around the house, and if you don't, odds are you could find someone that'll give them to you because everyone has them and not everyone uses them. I've had at least a half dozen pairs over the years and never paid for any of them, plus they're open air which is mad helpful.

I personally hate ear buds. They fall out, get uncomfortable the longer you wear them. BUT I have a pair of Sony over the ear headphones for when i'm at home and they rock. Sony is great

No wireless buds hold up in the cold ass cold. They do fine in the spring but mine always die when I'm in cold ass VT

Personally, I rock a bluetooth winter hat that has lil speakers in the hat itself. I love absolutely love it, lasts all day...Except now I gotta remember to charge my fking hat 🙄

I have yet to have my airpods fall out while skiing lol, the headphone cable is what makes them fall out 99.9% of the time in my experience. I wear a down jacket that I tuck into my snow pants and wear a shell over, so if my airpods fell out, worst case scenario I'd find it on my boot or somewhere in my pants. Music also pauses as soon as one comes loose, so you'll also probably notice immediately and push it back in. I don't think I've skied a day without airpods since I got them. Controls are great; double tap my left ear (with a glove on) and it will pause, double tapping the right ear skips the track. I can change the sound with the buttons of my phone through my pants. I'm not saying airpods are the best option, but if you are willing to spend the money, you probably won't be disappointed. I'm not an audiophile, but I am well aware that airpods do not have the best sound, but the convenience and ability to hear surroundings is why I'd buy a second pair if I lost mine.

Also, I've been seeing ads for clone pods, so if anyone got those, I'd be interested to hear if they're total shit, or a valid competitor.

If you want to risk 160$ to feel good that’s your choice I’m not saying I don’t like AirPods I love my pair but skiing with them isn’t a very good idea. It only takes one time to fall and have them pop out.

I could buy something cheap, that works well, and lasts for ever and somebody like you would still probably tell me I'm an idiot and I should have bought some other pair handmade by some guy at the top of some mtn for 10 times the price because there's some tiny gain in the sound quality.

Being an audiophile doesn't mean buying expensive stuff lol? Most of my headphones are less than $100. I don't own anything over $300. I recommended $5 headphones dude... did you even read my comments?

I only use the apple ones because I haven’t had a single other pair last nearly as long or function correctly. The apple in line volume/song skip replay thing just works. Have had nothing but bad experience with icons, or skull candy ear buds. I’ve broken maybe one pair of apple ear buds but they hold up great. Not sure how you are riding with them that the connector side is getting torn up. Do you have slack wherever you keep it on you? And do you keep your phone vertical with the connector up? Been riding like this and have used the same pair now for 4 seasons. Have a backup waiting from my last phone purchase. Very comfortable under the goggle strap or face mask. Almost never come out and sound quality is second to actually functioning well. Everyone I ride with that doesnt use them complains of their in line function stuff not working, or the phone having a problem and freezing. Maybe a good Bluetooth set would work well but my GFs Bose bluetooths die half way through a cold day. Not an apple fanboy but so long as I use an iPhone the apple ear buds have just never let me down like any other brands I’ve tried.

Anyone have any advice for dongles? Mine broke after only a month, so now I can't listen to wired headphones anymore. Hate wireless, don't want to worry about losing them or running out of battery/getting to cold. Also the power light on them is annoying as shit in the dark

Skullcandy Jib $10 in any store, they last about a year until the sound quality gets bad. Best sound out of a cheap earbud I've had. Also anyone who says Apple earbuds have good sound quality is a fucking idiot. They're super unbalanced over the frequency range.

Helmet Audio, bluetooth too and when the battery dies there is a wire you can connect. The pause button is on the earpad so can easily pause with gloves on
