eskeetSo I fucked up and bought arv 106s last year as a daily driver type ski, only problem is I got them in a 180 and I'm 6 foot. I love the ski but they are way too short. Stumbled across Surface's website and they currently have the outsiders for like 400 bucks, in a 189. I ride my bibbys most days but at 190 they can be a lot of ski in tight areas. Looking for something playful but versatile enough to ride in tight areas. The rocker profile is crazy, I would imagine it makes them rather pivoty in trees and what not. Thanks in advance.
jjdsteezethey are weird though not even 100 cm makes contact with the snow- i have the 189s
eskeetThat's wild haha. Playful ski?
jjdsteezei wouldn't necessarily say playful cause they are stiff. THey are fun though- side note: i have the one life's which are before they rebranded to the outsiders so idk if they made the ski that much different.
supersquidThey break in a lot, especially if you really get playful with the tip and the tails. It does take a while though. My onelifes are like butter, whereas my outsiders are still pretty stiff.
jjdsteezeive had 5 pairs of one lifes which i rode until falling apart and none of them seemed to "break in" though i am sure it possible. Still a fun ski in my mind even being stiff.
supersquidone of my favorite skis, I am 5"10 and ride the 179s in the park at -2 from center. they aren't that good for all mountain because they ski so short. However the 189 option mounted at like -4 would destroy. They are surprisingly stable and light and completely bash through crud. Very surfy as well. They excel the most in slush and soft snow. I will admit they dont hold an edge super well when its pretty icy.
eskeetThat's what I was thinking, 4 back. Do they feel poppy? Able to jump off side hits/ natty features with relative ease?
jjdsteezeAnd mine were both mounted true center.

i honestly don't know how you could ski them if they weren't mounted true center. all these people saying they have them mounted -2 or -4, you would have no tail at all
XtRemE11I’ve had them in 179 and 189. 179 is ridiculously fun for park and all around stuff. But when it gets deep they can tend to feel catchy, like underfoot sinks in a bit and creates a lot of drag. The 189s are much better in that regard.
One of the most fun skis I’ve ridden though in both lengths, stiff so you can charge hard but pivot and slash super easy, don’t have to worry about the tips diving. Super fun in chopped stuff, pop off everything, in the right conditions it’s insane how poppy they are.
Only complaint is I think they should have just made it flat underfoot, mine at least have a bit of camber and I feel like that little bit of camber makes the rocker bend just a bit too abrupt and that camber carves kind of funky.
Wish more companies would make skis like this. The concept is awesome and it’d be cool to have a couple different approaches to it.
And mine were both mounted true center.

TheVictatorI'm seriously considering getting these, where should I mount them? The center of the flat/cambered section isn't true center, right? I wanna put it as forward as possible without making them straight up bad for off-piste.
TheVictatorThe r/skiing discord was giving me a hard time when I asked about sizing these skis; they said that the skis would not work as a daily driver for me, were heavy, had a too extreme profile, would feel weird, etc...I naturally argued back because all I have seen about the ski is praise. But I'm sure there are some downsides to this ski--can anyone talk about what some of them may be based on what they've experienced or heard?
XtRemE11Not much downside really, if you care about carving groomers then i guess these arent great, but still do fine. icy days, slushy days, etc these still do great. 189 is a bit much if you're doing any park, 179 is a great length for park and all mountain but struggle a little in the real deep snow, not bad though.
supersquidice and highspeeds on groomers are where they suffer the most. They hold an edge pretty well in med to soft snow but really hardpack they start to lose it. They arent heavy at all. My 185 line chronics with sth 16s are way heavier than my 179 outsiders with jester pros. On groomed runs at highspeeds they can be a little scary because they dont seem to be the most stable, but I wouldnt call them squirly.
XtRemE11For sure there not great on highspeed icy groomers, but for a mega rocker ski thats obviously not designed as a groomer carving ski, id say they get along fine. i was doing speed runs on mine last year and clocked 76 mph, and i felt plenty secure.
Even with the massive rocker, when you land backseat or need that support from the tails, theres definitely plenty there to support you.
that all being said, yes the rocker does make for some strange carving characteristics on groomers, they can feel kinda catchy, etc. I could see that really bugging some people, but personally i couldnt care less.
KravtZI have a pair and they're super fun once and a while. If you're an everyday park skier they'd be a good daily driver but in terms of a true daily driver I'd stray away. They ride SO SHORT. In pow they float but aren't particularly good surfy or schmeary type of skis. I would stick with a traditional type of ski as a daily driver. These are definitely more spring / slush skis for me.
eskeetEnded up making the purchase.. Will be mounting them hopefully this weekend/early next week. I believe the line is true center, might be slightly back. Haven't measured yet. It feels like even with a center mount, the rocker in the tip would make them manageable all over the mountain. I'll let you know what I think when I get on them!
