Backflip Help

I tried some flips last season but couldn't land. I tried some this season and have the same problem. I can do them fine on a trampoline. On snow I'm not afraid to throw it, I just don't feel comfortable in the air. Looking for advice.

Everything looks good in the video except you just over rotated a bit. Just keep practicing and you’ll get them down better.

Try not to throw it with your arms as much. Use your hips and shoulders only. I always landed backseat/overrated until someone pointed out how I used my arms on the take off. Unless there's literally no kick in the jump, you can generate plenty of rotation without them.

This. Pop more and use your hips, not your arms, to send the flip

Also spot your landing early and adjust your landing gear from there (cause you’re over rotating right now)

You’re mad close (and over rotating backies is way better than under rotating haha)

Yeah, same as everybody else on here. It looks like your flip is started with your feet. Try visualizing popping at the lip and setting with your hips and shoulders more, and you'll find yourself having more time to look for the landing, instead of having it pass by you so quick cause your already rotating super fast.
But you basically have it.

be sure to POP more though, OP. that will make your air be a little more of a parabola as opposed to shooting out more than up, which hurts your ability to spot your landing and adjust for it. make sense?

Start rotation fast huck then tuck spot your landing and open up, put it to the feet - there ya go

So I tried to use my hips and this happened. I know I counter rotated with my arms so I need to throw them a bit. what else should I be doing. Ive tried so many times its frustrating.

Take this with a grain of salt because I'm also trying to learn backflips on skis and haven't landed any either, but in that video (besides not counter rotating with arms) you could have brought your knees up to your chest to speed up the rotation once you spotted the landing. In the first video you kinda set with your knees (is that a thing?) so your rotation is faster, but since you maintained the knees up the rotation never slowed down.

When learning backflips on a trampoline, I noticed it was easier for me to start a rotation slowly by setting with the hips and laying it out, then using the knees-to-chest motion to speed up the rotation and bring my legs around for the landing.

Seems like there might have been a lack of commitment on that one. Your pop looked mostly good but you started swinging your arms right away and that completely screwed your rotation. If you were to relax a bit more and let it come around you would have had plenty of time to bring your feet down to the snow.

Yeah, the pop looked pretty good to me. But yeah you kinda counter acted things with your arms. Instead, spot the landing as early as you can, and you’ll automatically slow or speed up your rotation a little. I feel like the thing in common between your over rotation and your under rotation was that you didn’t prioritize spotting the landing and adjusting from there

Make a poppier jump too

looks like you lead it more with your head/neck than your hips. It can be weird to get a hang of but try to focus on popping and setting the rotation from your core

Had a similar problem, every time I would lay it out instead of tucking I would over rotate, turns out I was using too much arms

once you spot your landing, try pointing your hands at the landing. this helped be bring my legs around when i was first learning.

I first learned backflips on a trampoline/diving boards, I did try a couple on skis first but I felt that the trampoline was really useful for learning the air awareness

Listened to this debate a few times. In my experience, the best is super slushy spring park jumps. It always tends to be the time in my season when I learn the most cause I feel more comfortable. You get quality built jumps (depending on where your home mountain is), and the landings are soft cause everything corn.

depending what park you're at, they might tend to have flatter take offs, which makes backies harder, than a jump you build with friends (especially if you build it with backies in mind)

otherwise they're great, especially if it's warm and soft. my first backy was def on a jump in the woods with a soft landing though, that's a nice place to try obviously since backslapping isn't risky at all in that situation (and it's better to over rotate than under rotate backies, almost always)

Just an idea might be useful to try and huck some on days with better visibility. I find that hucking flips on cloudy days makes it hard to figure out where you are at in the air and to spot your landing and time your flip properly.

Visibility is over rated for learning stunts plus you should be over rotating your flips anyways

M8, start on a relatively small, very poppy jump, and when you are about to go off it swing your arms up and put pressure into the jump and push off of it, then as you leave the jump pull your knees up into your chest and it should whip you around, the "say fuck it and huck it, style backflip", then, after you land your first huck and tuck flip, you will slowly begin to understand how to lay out and start doing the cool flips you see in videos. Hijacking thread because I want some advice on backflip from flat takeoff. Been getting major air off blackjack cattrack hit at snowbird. A lot of my friends will throw 360s off that which I dont have yet. I want advice for how to lay out a backflip from a flat takeoff.

Backies are more difficult on flat takeoffs but you just need a good solid pop and to whip your bottom half into the flip. As much speed as you can take while still getting a great strong pop too, cause the more air the better in that case

Just bring those knees to your chest after a great pop and spot the landing early as possible and you’ll be good

You’ll just need to learn to whip em and tuck into them then. Natural thing to do, it’s basically the safest thing you can do in a flip. Just pretend you have less air time than you do, your instincts will have you tuck for it

Thread jack again. I often bring my body forward when I spot my landing, I don’t know if it’s cause I’m mentally scared of catching tips or what but even in a forward position I seem to wash out back seat and it’s starting to hurt the knees. Any advice for that?

Hmm kinda hard to visualize but yeah it sounds like you’re getting scared. Look at it this way, if you’re scared, the safest thing you can do is tuck— that means pull your knees up but also keep your arms close to your body

Are you under rotating it, like ever? If so try a slightly bigger jump. If not just remember that and get a good pop set and tuck and trust yourself. When you spot the landing you’ll adjust to it

Any time I’m scared of under rotating, I just pull my knees up and tuck. You can flip unbelievably fast when you’re balled up like that. Just remind yourself you’re not doing yourself any favors by hunching forward

Ideally post a video and we can def tell you what’s wrong

I have experience under rotating which is why I think now I’m over rotating cause it sucks to under rotate. Here’s a go pro clip so I guess you will have to kinda infer a bit but it’s all I got at the moment.

when you get the flip almost all the way around your still looking at your knees. As soon as your inverted start looking for the landing. When you lay them out you should be able to spot the landing almost instantly, then youll have time to adjust your tuck depending on where you are relative to the landing.

Don’t mean to thread jack here. But I apparently need some help here too. I have no issues bucking, but I can never manage to stop my rotation on time or under rotate. I’ve broken two skis now coming up short, so I’m always on the side of over rotating. I do my best to spot, but I feel like I never truly can spot CLEARLY and stomp.

look at where your head is at with all three videos.In the first one you just threw it to hard. In the second one you stare at your knees almost all the way through, when your inverted your staring straight backwards.

When I throw my backflips I find it way easier to lay em out. Your like half tucked half not. As soon as your completely upside down you need to keep your head looking towards the landing. At that point it will be obvious where your gonna land. You most likely will naturally adjust for the landing as long as you dont take your eyes off of where you going to land.

Your body goes where your shoulders and head go. If you keep your head staring at the landing they will come a lot easier.

Something that helps me is to straight air the jump and really focus about how long I am in the air for. Once you have a solid feel for how long you are in the air, use that to perfectly time your backies. Also in second vid where you layed it out super hard it was perfect looks like you just focused way too much on laying it out and you forgot to tuck once you spotted the landing. It was slightly underrotated when you layed it out but if you tucked when you spotted the landing you have have stomped it or at least went barely tips in opposed to belly flopped. Hope this helped!!
