Listening to ski patrol

Was waiting inline with a guy at Louise and he had a radio listening to the ski patrol. Got me interested. Does anyone know anything about this topic?

Pretty boring radio station. Dead air 95% of the time and the rest of the time it's "does anyone know where the new bamboos are?" or if it's juicy and there's an accident it's "customer service to patrol" "go for patrol" "there's someone hurt on run X" "ok on my way" 15 minutes later "Jim could you bring a toboggan, no backboard? halfway down run X" "copy"

i mean like the other guy said its dead 95% of the time, and at least on the patrol i'm on when we are doing avy work we go on a different channel and go through central. Also as soon as we open a lift or something it goes through dispatch anyways so it pretty instantly goes to the public. Could be entertaining/dramatic if we're calling airmed or something though.

We made patrol take their own channel separate from mtn ops cause our patrollers won't shut the fuck up on the radio. It's been very peaceful ever since.

I'm glad we have seperate parks and groomng channels because groomers can be super chatty. Although we got bitched at by patrol because we were all working together digging out parks at the end of shift this morning and chatting it up a little bit. Nothing crazy but jesus.

I think it was just people who didn't sleep enough, have enough coffee yet bitching about nothing. I mean we were talking about the work we were doing at the moment, it wasn't like we were on the radio non stop talking about tv shows or something.

Where I work park crew they make me grab a radio every shift so when I'm bored I'll hop on ski patrol's frequency and fuck with them.

Ours is the exact opposite, we(patrol) need our own channel because management loves to hear themselves talk. We'll be running a higher profile incident and they'll be asking about the weather next month. i have definitely told the mountain manager to shut up on multiple occasions.

What you call ski patrol in the states and what we call mountain rescue in Chamonix are like chalk and cheese pal.They don't give a fuck where you have been skiing, how you have been skiing, if you have a pass etc etc. I share the lifts with enough Americans to know about your snow cops.

What I call ski patrol (in Canada) does not police the hill. At the mountains I've skied (in BC) you can go anywhere you like, so long as you stay out of areas closed due to avy hazards. Patrol does avy control and scrape you up. They do not give you speeding tickets or whatever the fuck you think they do. Maybe in 'Murca they do that.

I'm assuming they close areas of the mountain for avalanche control in Europe? I do see you have about 3x the avalanche deaths/year in the Alps compared to all of North America, but I can't see how many of those are at ski resorts.

this guy on the lift had the same thing, a patrol radio and the patrol were talking about how some kids ski had gotten blown into a tree when he was inside and he needed a ride down. Not very juicy

ahhh apologies mate for some reason i assumed you were in the states. Yeah we have a lot of avi deaths due to the lack of restrictions and people in the wrong areas for their skillset. Across the alps so far in the last month i think there has been about 25 deaths (may be more)...

And yes you are absolutely right about areas being closed off completely. We had a dump in Cham last week and they shut off a couple of lifts that take you to areas prone to slide, however that does not mean they will stop people hiking/skinning up to ride those areas

you got it homie. Yellow jackets give out the speeding tickets. Honestly most ski patrol (me included) don't give a flying fuck if you're out of bounds as long as you're not a jerry. We don't like to pull peoples passes (especially locals) and really just wanna help out when people are hurt and do avy control work
