Pretty sure its based on Aerials scoring, what did you expect from FIS? this is how every event is, world cups, grand prix and world champs. Im not saying I dont agree with you but its just the way it is.
Yeah 3 jumps is whack but it's a huge event as a whole with multiple resorts, they're not gonna put the time into having a jam format like X games, good to see big airs happening apart from x games but could be a little less formal for fis.
Props to Henrik for dripping style all over a FIS event.
I feel like he is between a rock and a hard place. On one hand comp skiing is lame, but Dollo stays on top of it by finding a way to score high and still manages to make his skiing look original.
"The men and women threw down tonight" to me translates to "The men and women did the same old shit they have been doing, one finally added a rotation in practice and landed it in the comp, and another touched their ski a little differently than last time". I mean no doubt they are doing some super human shit but unfortunately for a viewers standpoint its just boring as fuck. Ill watch WCS or Sammy Carlson invitational or BE invitational all day over this.
The idea scoring 2 of 3 jumps keeps the comp from being "who had the best triple 16?". A left and right shows who has the bag of tricks. Comp formats are comp formats. FYI - athletes, judges, coaches, etc... all have a say in comp format during the FIS meetings every fall.
I'm interested in how the "qualification heat system blows".... please explain...
What would be better? What about first round 3 runs all left then second round 3 runs all right?
Might be cool if there was like a bracket system with riders going head to head comparing styles. Kinda like a real quick slvsh tourney but with out calling tricks first.
Always love the "comps suck, I'm so fucking core" type people. The creative type comps/sessions are cool as fuck, but the comp hate is so stale. If you don't want to watch, don't. It's not that complicated. If you want to watch people spin under 7 all day just hang out by a jump in the park.
People were bitching about the bigger flat springs once we got into 9s and 10s, then bitching about double corks, then bitching about triples, then quads.
Honestly some things have gotten better. When dubs and trips were new, you had to have one on every jump. If you did anything else you were fucked. Now you can mix in all kinds of different rotations. Style is being rewarded more now. Idk, it's like anything else. Some people like this, some people like that, but being a hater doesn't make you more core.

This is what I was thinking. It's true, FIS competitions doesn't provide room for experimentation; and I'm all for competitions that do provide athletes lots of room to just try shit. But, FIS competitions are there to determine who's the best out. If you're good enough to be competing in this comp, and you can stomp your two best tricks in 3 tries then it means you've done plenty of experimentation, you know what tricks you want, and you deserve that podium. FIS comps showcase this specific skill. Other dope comps like superunkown for example give the athletes tons of room for experimentation. Personally, I think its great to have both types of competitions in our sport; strict formats give skiers who want to be the best the ability to showcase what they've been working on and show how good they really are, while loose comps give a bunch of great skiers the opportunity to get together in a less competitive atmosphere and really progress while competing. So, everyone has their opinions, but I'm glad that our sport has both types of competitions. What I do think is super unfortunate is that these looser competitions like superunkown and kimbosessions don't get as much publicity to showcase how fun our sport is and the camaraderie. Would be so dope if kimbo sessions was on ESPN.
All this being said though, what do I really know anyways, it's not like I'm even close to being good enough to compete at this level. So maybe if I were that good I'd have a totally different stance.

In reference to the image in the original post, slopestyle is the place to showcase the bag of tricks in that sense. That is why you got multiple kickers there.
In my opinion big air is a great format to show the coolest trick you can do. The left/right requirement just pushes the comp into "who had the best triple 16 to left and right", because total score is what matters. As an athlete who wants to win would you rather invest training time for mirrored trip 16's or for building up for one spectacular NBD? The current format makes the decision for you. Two tricks scored 92 will win over the possible 98 from that NBD if the skier can only pull some stock slopestyle trick for the other direction. If you don't want to see nose butter triple 1620 or sw pre-nose dub 1260 kinds of surprises in big air then sure, this format is fine.
With the current number of skiers capable of podiuming I would like to add third heat and 1 or 2 lucky losers to see more good skiing in the finals.

JOI used to have a format of best 180, 360, 540 and 720. In the past there were many more big airs with experimental formats, and not just jam sessions but real competitive big airs. If I was to decide, an X Games type of session with one tech and one style jump would be pleasing for everyone involved. And to define style would be anything spinning 900 or less.
Some great ideas in this thread. Its just my stupid opinion that it gets boring, but I guess i just watch too many comps. Bummer that Kai missed qualifying by .25 points i think it was, guess he just didnt spin enough right? Again, my stupid opinion, but if i was a judge watching his quali runs I would have wanted to see him compete in the finals.
