How Do YOU Edit?

Ridiculous

I am a professional editor and use Premiere daily. There is a ton of great resources out there to learn the program. However, at the end of the day it is not the edit program that makes a great story.

Premiere! Learn short cuts and it will change the game for you. You don't need a mouse/touchpad to edit. Everything can be done via shortcuts and it will help/improve so much.

Yeah I feel like lots of "newbies" (which we all were at some point) think that a better editing program = better editing, in the end they're all the same just depends on your preferences.

That being said, Premiere is the standard, tons of people use FCPX because they're stuck in the apple ecosystem, but FCPX does run really well on Apple hardware. If you're a student, premiere is like $10 a month and the whole suite is like $20 a month, if you're serious about editing video (ie make any money at all) you should pay for your editing software, just my two cents.

seriously. FCP is dirt cheap for how powerful it is and Premiere is debatably reasonable depending on your stance on subscriptions

you can't have a dozen+ hours into an edit and your shitty torrented copy decide to not work and tell the client they're outta luck haha

If you are on a budget, you can cheat the system with the good ol' final cut trial and date trick. It works, but as spoken above, if you're really into film making, pay for a quality software

nah trackpads can be super quick for editing on the go especially when you're used to it, premiere CC also utilizes the haptic feedback built into 2015+ MBP trackpads so they haptic click with each snap using the selection/razor tool etc. also when zooming in and out

Ive used a track pad many times to edit and I absolutely hate it, but I'm just messing around calling it crazy, but for me a mouse is the only option.

true that mice are arguably the best option especially to not block access to kb shortcuts, but it seems that a lot of younger editors are more used to a trackpad than a mouse, myself included. Have windows trackpads caught up to the last decade of Mac trackpad excellence yet?

Premiere is best imo for more complicated ski edits and even films. Avid is used for TV and large films and is a little more complicated. If you don't know much about editing just use FCP

From what I have heard Marvel almost primarily uses Premier and Adobe After Effects. I'm not doubting what you are saying at all though, Avid is the industry standard along with Adobe. (from what I know)

Adobe is definitely gaining momentum. However, Avid is better for longform editorial. That's not to say that you can't cut a feature film on Premiere. Avid is better at media management and for editors who are working in teams. Also a big part of it is the hardware that is currently supported for Premiere and the cost of setting up a machine room. I was working at post-production facility that was responsible for finishing trailers and we were using FCP7 for layback on some spots. This hardware is expensive and facility managers and owners are not going to be willing to take a chance on a software package that is unproven, especially if it requires new hardware to support it.
