Why does everyone hate new wave so much? I would rather see creative and technical jibs than big flips and spins personally. The point when it gets dumb is when people put easy and silly looking tricks in their edits because it "fits the vibe" of new wave.
No cap, it was the style to begin with. Its like a comedian who's funny just because you have never heard someone so vulgar, it wears off quick. I mean I honestly believe Henrik is so famous purely because nobody has ever see something so dumb before, mans can ski, mans can not dress.

I would not describe Henrik as new wave, baggy clothes =/= new wave
freestylers have been wearing baggy clothes for years

what gets me is that almost every famous new wave skier lists henrik and phil as their biggest influences, hackel just admitted to trying to even talk like henrik. I think henrik is easily the most imitated skier of all time, so why doesn't he get shit for that like magnus does?

Probably because a lot of Henrik's tricks are actual big flip tricks in addition to butters and stuff
People get influenced by the slarvy buttery side of Henrik bc that's what made him unique, but the fact that he has unparalleled technical skill too makes it so that people can't shit on him

I mean, Hackel has done triples and Magnus has done plenty of huge dubs and butters. Neither are as good as dollo IMO but its weird how when everyone copies henrik and twall its all chill but when people copy magnus its treated like cancer

That's because he dresses like that kid from the trailer park who nobody would sit by because he smells like dookie. I mean, I'm 1/10,000th the skier he is, but the man's taste is questionable

henrik dresses absurdly and barks like a dog but wearing track pants and a funny shirt from the thrift store is over the line??
I don't make the rules mang. Baggy clothes and whiteboy dreads are cringy in their own rights, but dressin up like a dork on purpose makes you look like a dork ya know?

LOL except they're not creative or technical. Half their shit is them improvising after fucking up and pretending they did it on purpose. I think new wave is dying because it was a stupid ass trend.

who do you consider to be a creative skier? genuinely curious
Everyone comparing Magnus and henriks clothing style is looking in the wrong direction. Henrik isn’t catching shit because all of his tricks are clean and proper, Magnus is because he does 4 shifty front swaps and then 720 swerves on flat after the hit. Henriks style isn’t getting copied and played out because the majority of us can’t do his shit

IMO the reason the new wave is appealing is because I can actually go and try the tricks. People who defend it by saying a bench jib is as technical as a cork seven are wrong. I guess not being able to do a cork 7 blunt or a rodeo 5 critical makes me a shitty skier to some people, but I'm 25 now and if it weren't for stupid easy tricks like bunch bounces I would've gotten bored with park a long time ago.
I think there was so much hype almost as a backlash against how technical and high consequence park skiing was getting. People took any opportunity to get stoked about more relatable tricks, celebrating creativity as a new alternative to technicality and risk.
The issue as I see it is that not everyone skiing in that style is actually creative. Or technically good at skiing. Like Magnus is weird as fuck, technically skilled, and creative. Biting his style or tricks (while doing less technical versions of them) kind of defeats the whole spirit of creativity and expression and waters the whole thing down.
Kind of by definition, the fact that "New Wave" has developed a particular aesthetic and trick list seems to be its downfall. If the approach were truly genuine you wouldn't be able to tell who's "New Wave" and who isn't because they'd actually be doing totally different things.
For better or worse at least the thug trend was honest - people weren't parading around telling everyone else how creative and expressive they were while copying everyone else. We all just wore the same silly clothes and kept trying to ski hard and smooth and have fun.

People will go and say "man slopestyle jumps and big air are just jumping the shark, it's becoming like aerials, I miss the big floaty spins" and then turn around and say "man this new wave jib shit is crap, I wanna see people doing big flips off of jumps" lol...I don't blame new wavers for trying to break away from the big spin stuff as long as what they're doing is still impressive in its own right

THIS THIS THIS
I just started skiing again after a 5-7ish year "break" (addiction and mental health stuff but I've been doing good for the last 2 years now) and now I just like jibbing around and having fun. I can't do half of the shit I used to be able to do and I also am usually riding with a 12 year old (kid brother that I just got into skiing) and I like to keep things fun with him and ski features that he is also able to do. New Wave isn't a slopestyle competition, it's just people having fun and skiing creatively without risking their body. No it isn't as techy as a cork 7 or rodeo or whatever but it's fun. I also like watching New Wave riders like Wabs because it actually makes me want to go out and ski. Sometimes I watch the really techy guys and I just feel guilty for ruining my ski "career" with drugs and I feel embarrassed about my current skill set. Whatever though, it's supposed to be fun. 99.9% of us aren't making a living doing this.

This is why I like tree skiing. Nobody to watch or judge or any pressure to do anything. Its just you, the snow, the line and silence.
