Sup NS,
Was looking through some used skis at a second hand ski store today as I am looking to add some kind of capable all mountain ski to my quiver. Currently, I only only a pair of 2013 Atomic Punx, which I love, but are pretty skinny with a waist of 82mm. I'm really looking for something that's great for a little bit of everything be it off piste, trees, groomers, and potentially a little bit of park (though this isn't essential for these skis).
While in the shop I came across a pair of 2012 Faction 3.zero's and a pair of 2013 Atomic Bent Chetlers both for real great prices and included bindings. Pretty sure they'd both need a remount as the Atomic's were center mounted and I'd really want them at -2, and from eyeballing the Factions I could tell were not going to fit my 330 BSL booters.
After doing a bit of research they are very different skis across the board. The factions are I believe 114mm waist, so quite a bit thinner than the Atomics while still being fairly wide. I've read that they are absolute rockets and love to ski faster than you, holding an edge super well on groomers and bombing it off piste. However I've heard that they are exhausting to ski due to their long turn radius and weight.
The Atomics seem to be float-tastic and super playful, but a bit chattery on crud, and I'm not sure how viable a ski with a waist of 123mm is across the board.
Personally, I've never skied anything with more than a 100mm waist, so I don't know if 123mm on the Bent Chetlers would be super hard to get used to. The mass and reports of the 3.zero's being able to really only dial the speed up to 11 has me apprehensive as well. I'm still confident that I could make either work though.
I'll be going to another used gear place tomorrow to see what else they might have, but if I don't find anything there, I'll be going with one of the two setups above. Any advice would be appreciated, let me know if you have any questions for me. These deals I found were great, so while it's tempting to pick the absolute perfect ski new, I'm not looking to drop a grand on a new setup so I'm limiting myself.
Thanks guys!
