Replying to 2 Skis, 1 Bag

Many airlines have a policy similar to something that says 50lb limit for ski bag and only one pair of skis per bag. Boots + skis+ poles count as one item.

Anyone ever gotten busted at the counter trying to take two skis in a bag even if the weight is good? It's kind of dumb. If I have the bag under 50lbs, does it really matter? I've never had an airline ask to check my ski bag before but also never tried bringing two skis in the same bag either. Risk is $75 oversized charge. Flying SW so bags are free anyway but...
