What up, NS? In the market for a new pair of powder sticks and having some trouble deciding between the 182 CT 4.0 and 185 ARV 116.
A little bit about myself. I’m 5’7”, 145 lbs. Live in NYC, so mostly ski VT these days, but grew up skiing out west (Telluride and Squaw mostly). Still try to make it back west for a week each year and am also planning trips to Argentina and Japan. Pretty aggressive skier who prefers long arcs and high speed to the tighter, more technical style common in the east (somewhat a product of where I grew up). That said, I also had my park rat phase, so enjoy flexing, buttering, pressing all over the mountain. Need a ski that can blend both these styles, while handling cliffs and crud and be light enough to throw around in trees or moguls. Ideally, something that’s equally at home in 8” of VT cement and 20” of Japow. Bonus points if it’s fun for a park lap or two.
Currently, I’m on a pair of '09 179 Hellbents that, to quote another post on a different thread, "I love, but are fucking stupid." They power cruise like a boat over everything and anything. They’re so flexy you can hop and pop over every little bump. They (kinda) hold an edge well. And they’re just unsinkable, even at true center. All this said, I’m just getting really sick of the weight. One of the issues I’ve run into here in VT in particular is that runouts are shorter and sketchier, so you often need to shut down speed quickly in dicey terrain or when landing a cliff. This is a full body workout on Hellbents. They also cannot handle east coast trees.
So… done a ton of research and settled on ARV 116s and CT 4.0s. Originally was leaning toward the CT 4.0s because they’re supposed to be a chargier, freestyle-oriented 118mm ski, despite being relatively light. Then, heard some great things on here and Blister about the versatility of the ARVs (esp. in situations where you need to whip them around). I also have a soft spot for Armada – Been riding them as my park skis for 10+ years. Most interested in feedback on flex profile, versatility and performance at high speed and float with a forward mount (again, at true now with Hellbents; would mount these -2 / -2.5 cm probably)
Thoughts? Much appreciated for the help.
