Tyrolia attack 13 prerelease problem

nuno81291got these clamps new on my new Arvs. Been skiing jesters for 10 years, man no comparison. First run the Attack prereleases on a hippie killer. Try to do some tip dips on the ground, releases every time. Ridiculous. Now fighting the shop that they are advertised as a freestyle binding and can’t keep up with routine tricks for me. If you do anything beyond simply skiing these, do not buy the Tyrolia attack 13. Jester has been bomber for me, no issues. Cheaped out and got what I paid for. Dins at 9.5 set up by authorized tech. Tech agreed I have unicorn tendencies and the binding design isn’t up to snuff for it. If you are considering these and throw down; save your money.

nuno81291I didn’t test both but I’ll keep that in mind. Going to try the business card thing before taking them out and see if any better. Atleast have my old pair in the car. It is garbage, I changed thread title to be a bit more mellow, again I’ve heard nothing but great things and that these are a solid binding. Something definitely seems wrong. Does anyone else who own these have a similar look of their toe of the boot in the toe piece? Just seems very flimsy in terms of contact with the boot toe.

nuno81291Well I did the business card thing and didn’t eject once today. Couldn’t get it to recreate the issue. I’m still kind of hesitant on them but it appears they are now functioning correctly.

Greg_KJust thought of something for Attack binding owners to check as well. The toe height adjustment is usually done by placing the boot in the binding with a business card height spacer on the AFD and under the toe piece of the boot. You then adjust the toe height down until the business card/spacer has some resistance to being pulled out from under the boot. I’ve found this can still allow for some play which may cause the bindings to not feel as solid and maybe pre-release.

Do the same steps as above and adjust the height down on the boot until it’s harder to pull out the business card or spacer but then push down on the rear cuff of the ski boot like you are trying to make the boot toe wheelie. You may find that there is lots room now under the toe. While trying to make the toe wheelie, adjust the toe down until the card/spacer is resisting again. This extra step may take out any extra play on your toe piece.

nuno81291According to the authorized tech at my shop yes they are set up correctly and are testing correctly. I did not expect them to be as beefy and bomber as the jester per the price, but I didn’t think they would affect basic tricks which I do every single day I Ski, which is a major bummer. Just trying to spread the word. I read nothing but great reviews and now feel obligated to give my very negative experience to save someone else the headache of a situation I have now.

i have heard more than one customer tell me the attack 2s i mounted on their skis prereleased even though their dins were plenty high. The Attack 1s i have only heard good things about. I think the wrap around toe of the attack 1s has better leverage on the boot to reduced accidental release. But who knows.

Very rare to pre-release once DIN, forward pressure and Toe height/AFD all set properly.

Greg_KNo, but if you don’t do the critical step of yanking the boot back before you test and adjust the AFD, the boot goes in a slightly different angles/heights each time you put it in. So, you could adjust it and think you’re good when it’s still WAY low. That’s more likely what’s happening in any “loosening” case.

By pulling the boot rear cuff first to wheelie the toe first and THEN testing the AFD you are eliminating any possible slack. A missed step on about 1/2 of the bindings I’ve had shops do. Low AFD makes the binding feel loose and may cause pre-releases. Try both boots too as one might be different, so adjust so both are tight.

Not just an Attack issue either, Griffons, Shifts etc with adjustable AFDs can all have this issue. Salomon you adjust the toe down on the boot but the step of raising the toe before testing crucial on all of these.

Scott.MalkinsonI didnt know all boots had an adjustable afd in the toe. Is the afd adjustment on the attack 2s just like the normal afd adjustment but modified to move far enough to accommodate gripwalk boots?

Greg_KCheck the forward pressure-pics above in the thread and make sure it’s in the scribed area. Then check AFD height under the toe with a business card as described above. Bet AFD is low/and or forward pressure is off.

Foxtrotx1Greg K, do you feel that the elasticity differences between the pivots and attacks is all that important in the grand scheme? It seems hard to navigate all these binding war threads sometimes.

Greg_KElasticity of the toe or heel allows for retention without unwanted release although adjusting the DIN can also somewhat offset this. Properly adjusted bindings shouldn’t be pre-releasing but Pivots make this possibility even less likely.

The big advantages of the Pivot is that high elasticity but also very little binding ramp, solid construction, ability to use in a CAST system and a very short mounting length. The short mounting length allows the ski to naturally flex more than a traditional heel track binding mount. Overall, I think they are the highest performing bindings out there.

The disadvantages of the pivot is they are more expensive, are heavier than the Attack and they don’t have much adjustability when it comes to different boot sizes.

Pivots are the best performing binding and the Attacks are the best value. Attacks over very good retention when properly adjust, are quite solid yet very light, have less ramp then most bindings(only the Pivot is flatter), long adjustability for different boot sizes without remounting and they can always be found on deals.

So Pivots if you can afford them and Attacks if you want the bang for the buck leader.

dolanslebensraumYeah my when i got my attack2 13s mounted professionally they did a great mount but didnt even touch the afd adjustment. When i got the skis back the afd in the toe was loose as fuck and i had to adjust it myself.



i kind of remember either mceachran or jesper tjader talking about his attack 2s prereleasing on mute grabs or something which he solved by either the afd or increasing toe din or something.

its pretty obvious head (tyrolia) wouldnt bring a product to market without testing the bitchtits out of it to make sure it was rock solid. I think with the toe wings having such short length of engagement on the front of the boot it is very important for the afd to be adjusted precisely for the boots to be able to work as they should.

im curious as to whether the new redesign of the attack2s this year made any changes to the toe piece. The original attacks had no prerelease problems no matter what bcuz they had those huge toe wings reaching way around each side of the boot. I wonder if tyrolia/head made the toe wings larger on the new attack2 redesign to be more idiot proof like the og attacks in case the afd isnt correctly adjusted.
