I don't understand a lot of the terrain choices, especially Hakuba which always seems boring. There's so much emphasis on dropping cliffs and freestyle tricks, but good trick-able natural features seem really few and far between, and most of them seem to have super flat landings. I get the argument that the best freeriders are the ones who can somehow figure out how to find a great line in sketchy terrain. On the other hand, you see almost everybody in places like Hakuba skiing short runs down relatively modest vertical and getting totally fucked up by all the flat landings. Meanwhile the commenters talk endlessly about how the conditions are bad and everyone is back-slapping their hucks and I just keep thinking, hasn't it occurred to anyone to move the comp to another mountain where people can actually compete on doing really rad shit instead of spending all their energy trying to not get wrecked?
Not sure if the venue for Hakuba would have been the same regardless of snow levels, but they were well behind on snowfall this year (around 1.5m below average for January I think). You have to deal with what you get, especially as the locations are set before the season kicks off and a weather window can only get you so far.

Of course they can. Not in the middle of the comp but for future years they certainly could. This isn't a one-off thing. Hakuba has been like this for at least a few years. Kicking Horse has had its share of similarly bad years too.

if the landings and lines were like that, what would separate pro freeriders from everyone else?
even considering better mountains, theres definitely a difference.
casualAgreed that the Hakuba venue wasn’t that great, but then again I wouldn’t say Japan is renown for their sustained steep faces with technical lines.
Most of the tour venues are sick though.
Other parts of Hakuba just might be too gnarly to hold a comp on.
