Who else is on track to lose a toenail this season?
Whelp I sure done it again. Last year was right big toenail; took 4 months to fall off and prob total of 6 to look normal again. This weekend I landed hard backseat and totally fucked my left big toenail. Just ended up draining it yum. The tip of my toe is actually tingly lol prob not good. Anyway...

Its pretty nutty but yeah, he lost all tone nails once and one of them shed twice. It was a combination of non-stop ski-touring (often long distances) and ice climbing for many months on end. Factor in super cold Alaskan conditions and your toenails start to become more independently minded.
Wasn’t planning on losing a toenail this season since I am primary a rail skier, but the local mountain decided to have a big air event with. 50 ft booter which is massive for around here. One run I almost sent it to flat and I had a double ejection yardsale. I guess my 8 dins didn’t appreciate that impact even though I wasn’t off balance or anything. I ended up breaking my left big toenail. Not a fun experience at all.
I have only got on the mountain once this year and no park. But I’ve lost one or two, had other times I was sure I was gonna lose it but never happened. So there *could* be hope

really? They dont hurt now, and if I let them be it they dont bother me. Then one day it will just come loose after being in the shower. Draining it seems painful.

It's not painful if you avoid sticking the needle in the nail bed itself. Usually the nail is puffed up enough, that you can go in sideways until you get through and it gushes everywhere. It's still terrifies me though that I'll poke too deep.
But if it's not painful and/or an old injury, then I wouldn't do it. I usually do it because the blood causes a lot of pressure. Risk of infection also with draining.

fs, if it was constant pain I would probably start messing with it. Im a picker and a scratcher when it comes to that stuff. But if there is no pain, I dont see a reason to potentially cause myself some.

Yea, unless it's painful there's no reason to poke through. If it's been a while chances are there's no fluid anyways and it's all dried and gross. Just a waiting game for it to fall off.
Also if you do try and drain a toe, heat the needle up to red hot and it kind of burns through and requires very little poking pressure meaning your chance of poking the quick below is very low.

Draining it is a cunt, your toenail won't feel shit but there is a thin layer of nerves between the toenail and the blood pool that you must puncture.
My right big toenail is completely wrecked thanks to literally 1 day of skiing in poorly fitting boots two years ago. I didn't drain it after the first day when it was completely blue, and that was a major mistake. That nail ended up falling off in 2017, with a new nail growing in under. That new nail grew in super ingrown, so the doc had it completely removed. After that, the new nail that grew in was looking really weird, and I had one doc suggest removing it again and killing the growth plate so I just wouldn't have a nail. But another doc said it'd be fine, so I kept it. Now that nail looks like it's from a gargoyle or something — raised off the surface, bends up from the base then back down at the end, and is otherwise just disgusting. But it hasn't hurt that much recently, so I just dealt with it. That was, until this past week, and now I'm getting lots of pain again. If this one falls off, I think I might just have a doc kill it off and have a fun / gross fact to tell about myself not having one of my toenails.
TLDR: drain your nails as soon as you notice a significant amount of blood under them. After a day or two, it's probably a lost cause, and just pray that the new nail grows in correctly. Otherwise, you might end up with gargoyle nails. Also, don't cut the edges of your nails super short cause that can increase the chances of them getting ingrown. Lastly, getting boots that actually fit is pretty cool.
I had a strange toenail phenomena this season. I got a completely blue nail, and instead of draining it, I went skiing again 2 days later. It somehow bled out through my toenail into my sock, no draining required. But I’m worried the nail still may be fucked because it spent a solid ~1.5 days separated from the nail bed by blood, and it feels super funky a week later
Not even, my toes just jam into the front of my boots whenever they take any impact. I was landing switch all day because I knew and they still got jammed. My boots just haven't broken in yet.
A few years ago i lost my right big toenail, and this dumb thicc toenail grew in to replace it. This thing is like carbon fibre of toenails. clippers can barely cut through it. Im quite thankful for it honestly.
chrisjbauerI just got new boots and had them fitted and molded. First day went out and both my big toes are now dead.
I have similar problems and have been in 4 different pairs of boots in the last year or so. Basically had to go 1 boot size up for park + move the mount point of my non-park skis back to force a more forward stance.
Got about a half centimeter growth since I poked it. Hopefully it falls off before mid April when I'll be at the ocean....tip of my toe is still tingly. Think I permanently damaged a nerve
