Depends on the snow hardness. On slush or soft snow the deceleration of smacking your head on the snow is about the same with or without a helmet.
When its icy i dont like skiing park anyway tho.
But i grew up hitting the park without one so i guess im grandfathered in like the old generation of hockey players.
If i wanted to get to a level where i was competing in slopestyle id wear one. But if your dicking around within your limits on soft snow i dont see the urgency of wearing one.
Some pros seem to be strong and talented enough to protect themselves in a crash like delorme and some others.
For what its worth i wear a super thick hat

OP you’re absolutely right. I still grew up skiing without a helmet and my favorite skiers don’t wear one. It is what it is but I learned to ski without one and 8 years later I still don’t wear one. I still agree with you I just don’t wear one. Tomorrow I’m going to a helmets are cool documentary that the high fives foundation is hosting so maybe it’ll change my mind.

I was about to do that, and i don't know what i was thinking. Luckily, my friends stopped me in time and told me i was gay for doing that so i was like fuck this i dont wanna mess with that gay shit. So i put my helmet back on and rode away into the sunset
Soft snow doesn’t mean you should take off your helmets !!!! Personally , I eat shit and tomahawk right to my head 100x more on slush than on packed powder or ice. Not to mention the fact of how stupid you have to be to wanna risk being brain dead the rest of your life because Tall T Jim in the park thinks it’s cool to rock no helmet and you wanna be just like him. I’m at the point rn where if I try to rock no helmet, I feel like something is missing in my skiing. It’s like I forget how to ski and I just throw my helmet back on right away.

jossi wells is one of the sickest skiers ever but he also seems like the kind of dude who spends more time in front of the mirror than my girlfriend so it's not shocking he holds this opinion lol

Everything you said here is nonsense. As a doctor, all the ski injuries I see are from people hitting trees, rails, and each other, not hitting their heads on the snow.

Hey dipshit, the person I was responding to was saying that helmets aren't necessary when the snow is soft (and because he wears a "soft hat"), I was saying otherwise. I see head injuries from skiing all the time in my clinic and my point is that there are many other things you can hit your head on other than just the ground, so wear a helmet.

he was saying no it's not just snow you hit your head on (not that that would be a great argument against helmets haha), there are tons of hard things like trees and rails to whack your head on, so you should wear a helmet. it sounds like you guys agree on the large scale and you misunderstood him or lost track of who was saying what
I used to just put the helmet on when trying something new, then once upon a time I was landing a jump and smoked a kid in the landing, my memory of that night starts in the ER with all my homies around. I didnt take it easy enough that week after getting the concussion and ended up fainting 7 days later. My buddies were scared so they called an ambulance. All said and done it cost me about 4500 bucks for two ambulance rides and two ER visits. I've realized that a good helmet can save me lots of money so I don't ride without one now. If none of that ever happened I'm sure I'd still be riding with no helmet.
This is my argument beside comfort and looks. I never wear a helmet when I skate, it just feels bulky and unnatural and when I skate I'm on rough concrete sometimes at relatively high speeds and doing trick with similar risk to skiing. Thus when I ski I don't decide to wear a helmet, it's a personal choice and I feel just as safe without as I would with.
I love seeing people think there the shit because they don't have a helmet and be absolutely ass. Makes my day especially when they fall and loose a few more brain cells. I cant complain I honestly enjoy watching natural selection take its toll. Personally the world needs more natural selection.

Yea man, that's what I'm tryna say kinda, I don't see the issue like I'm not trying to say helmets are wack or saying that other people shouldn't wear one, that's just my reason. If anything I should add that I support helmet use. It's just my preference.

Anyone else know skiers at their home hill or mountain or somewhere that never wear a helmet, fall all the time super heavy, but literally never hit their head? Feel like I see this often
I had a patient a few years ago when I lived in a different city who was an avid cyclist. He explained to me that he didn't need to wear a bike helmet because he was a lifelong athlete (actually former Olympian, though not in cycling). He reasoned that he had good reflexes and skills and wouldn't get in a crash, and if he did he "knew how to fall" and wouldn't get seriously hurt. I told him that he was underestimating how fast and powerful cars are, and if he got hit by one he wouldn't have time to react.
About 2 weeks later I saw on the news that he had been hit by an old man driving a Lincoln sedan on the highway, he was not wearing a helmet. He was airlifted to the nearest trauma center where he was treated for a long list of injuries. The right side of his skull was fractured and bleeding internally and required emergency surgery to save his life. The combination of the trauma, bleeding, and surgery cost him his right eye, right ear, and a significant portion of his frontal lobe. He was in a coma for months but survived and eventually went home. His wife and son took care of everything from feeding him to helping him use the toilet for about a year. After extensive PT he was able to do these things on his own, but his brain was never the same. He is in constant pain and he compulsively yells strange stories about how "a chiropractor he met at a party tried to kill him." His adult son had to move back home to help take care of him, but most of all I felt sorry for his wife who is spending her life caring for this bizarre stranger.
Maybe wearing a helmet isn't about making a smart choice for your own safety, maybe it's to protect the people who love you.
What other people choose to wear or not wear is nobody's business but their own. Also, virtue signaling is truly stupid and OP and those backing him up should look it up and stop doing it. Yesterday.
