This guy can steer a helicopter better than i can steer my weiner when peeling in the toilet stall

Dropping a rope from a heli takes time, and if the dude needed help asap, hovering on the slope saved a few minutes. Also if it is really windy, a rope can be super sketchy. Also, heli pilots are fucking insane.

Alright, did a little bit of research and found an interview of the guy in French where he explained why.

Basically, that manoeuvre is something he is trained to do, while it seems spectacular, he knows exactly what he is doing. They evaluated the slope and determined that it could fairly safely be done here. This is not his decision, it's a team decision (this is a military branch so there are processes to determine the best approach)

Basically, the weather was about to quickly change and they had a lot of clouds quickly moving in, roping was the first option but it was determined that it would be riskier because of the time it can take and the weather changing.

He also explained that this is very stable, the chopper is conceived to handle stationary, and this isn't really that dangerous. He also said that even if his rotor had touched the snow that day, the snow was very soft and while it could have slightly damaged the tip of the rotor but probably wouldn't have led to crash anyway.

Basically it sounds like it's really not that big a deal to the guy, easy stuff.

Different topic for another day, but I personally believe this is how it should be, along with healthcare and education, and maybe except in cases of extreme recklessness, emergency rescue should be covered by society. As a US resident, I would be happy to pay additional taxes to make that a reality. I don't go to church but I guess that makes me a better Christian than most.

Oh, my bad, I gave a serious reply to a trolling internet tough guy, let me rectify course.

I know, right! Blowing up a knee in the backcountry on top of col d'Anterne and needing assistance? What a pussy!!! I personally blew both my knees on top of Everest, skied down, and sent triples along the way. Fixed myself too once I made it back to basecamp with some dyi surgery in my tent to fix the ligaments. Went back up the next day.

I'll try and get this guy's contact info so you and I can team up to send him a note detailing how much of a pussy he is and how tough we are in comparison.

Quasi related but every euro trip I’ve skied had numerous inbounds medical helicopter pick ups. I’m talking knees or broken bones not life threatening injuries. Seems to be all the rage there... and they absolutely pay for it. Best was they closed a park to land the chopper to pick up a kid who fell off a box... never got to drop into a line after a helicopter took off before. Was kind of surreal.

Correct that inbound rescues are managed by municipalities which can work with private entities and ask the injured person to pay for the rescue.

In the case discussed here, this is not inbound but a backcountry rescue, performed by PGHM which is not a private entity but a military branch, therefore public, and 100% covered by SDIS (public emergency entity). The injured person will not pay a cent.
