Do you guys think skiing is going in a good direction? I feel like now people are foucsing to much on spin to win and nothing about style. Also it is such a thing for tourists that the ski industry is more focused on making money than people enjoying skiing
I think that it is all in good nature. For me I like seeing cool butters and creative rail tricks with personality than seeing guys just spinning on and on. And you cant really do anything about the tourists, jerrys and the casual skiers. If anything, when they buy a ton of new gear and shit, this helps the entire ski industry, plus the small skis towns in the areas.
eheathI read the body and had to check the date, people made these threads 15 years ago, how do you think it has gone since then?
Lol I was thinking the exact same thing. About every year since 2003 someone has said something like this. At the end of the day you cant really judge style in a comp in a unbiased way so its all about technical ability, thats just how comps have always been. Movies and edits are the other side of the coin where you can show off style and creativity.
Also, well played my friend.

In all of these threads people miss the point that skiing isnt going in one direction, every type of skiing (of which there are now so many perceptions of each variety it is hard to classify them) has always expanded and fluctuated based on what people enjoy or what makes "profit?". Having financial gain be a factor in how skiing changes feels unnatural, but allows more people to enjoy skiing, pros to support themselves, and gives skiers a true say in the "direction" of their preferred type of skiing. An exception to this is the overtaking of smaller "mom and pop" resorts which like any small business, is ours to support if we wish for them to exist alongside larger corporate owned resorts.
Bottom line it has always been "changing directions" so as long as people like it and the snow falls, skiing can be what you want it to.
i think we're at a point where industries are changing, young and small companies are flourishing... it's all in time and i think we'll just have to wait and see. New wave is a thing now, and im wondering where that'll go

People have been saying this forever. I bet the first time somebody put metal edges on their skis their friends were like "Bro you're ruining skiing!!!!" and went on to hassle him about how he wasn't core enough. Omg, real binding that release? What kind of pussy shit is that. Oh you want to hit jumps now? The purity of the turn isn't enough for you anymore? Helicopters? WTF?!?!?!? Skiing was way better when it was just grabs, this spin to win shit is crap. I saw a guy spin twice around once. Like wtf is he trying to prove?

I can agreee with the spin to win arguement. With skiing being such a huge industry now, everyone is inventing crazy new ways to be somewhat successful. This is mainly through doing batshit crazy stunts. And yes there is a lack of style for sure. In my opionion skiing isn’t about being able to throw a good trick or not but more about feeling connected while doing it, ya know? Overall, skiing isn’t really going in one direction it kinda goes everywhere possible. Its more about which path you choose to follow and embrace.
So its funny, that video is on youtube twice as 2002 and 2003. The video is 2002 and I can't find his actually 2003 run, because that was his best for sure, the big switch 9 that was the ender in his 1242 segment.

That was a fun video to watch, skiing has completely evolved

As long as it's going downhill, it's the right direction!
Don't dis my "Spin To Win" stuff!

Was planning on posting the exact same thing. Classssssic attempt at a provocative post.
Trends in skiing will always be silly and entertaining. Gangster skittles to eurotrash with a nice helping of looking like you're on the spectrum - skiers will blindly follow something and get stoked on it while everyone else shakes their heads.
I feel like lots of skiers have a weird transition phase where you get less pumped on what's trendy, then eventually just get over it and ride for yourself and your homies. Actually work on your own style instead of whatever style is popular. Challenge yourself technically however you want. Skiing got immeasurably more fun as soon as I lost touch with the "scene" a bit and focused on my own personal reasons for loving skiing.
Beyond the trends, there always have been and always will be talented visionaries doing their own thing and I get the feeling they're gonna be pushing skiing in diverse and awesome directions no matter what.
SFBv420.0considering the fastest growth in the market/industry in # of users and better gear consists of going up
to
and the spin to win jibby flippy hucky steezey skittles styley stuffs a fad
well be fine
Glad you're having enjoying yourself out there, but not everyone is fortunate enough to live near larger mountains that receive consistent snowfall that make BC touring a worthwhile method for getting turns/having fun on snow. I think we all wish we did!
Skiers will always be creative with what the terrain and snow conditions that they can utilize, and the gear will continue to improve along side people's desire to ski whatever they can, whenever they can. The Shift binding is a great example, demonstrating that people want a safe, stable, and responsive binding that performs well in a variety of locations including in deep pow and rougher conditions you might find inbounds. So as the tech improves, people will continue to do mindbending stuff on skis in every "discipline". With the development of skis made with flex patterns and shapes to facilitate buttering, we now have skiers- some might label them new wave- that focus on styling out and developing what skiing is in opposition to the competition side of freeskiing that requires a stiffer, more traditionally shaped ski. With the development of lightweight and dependable touring bindings, people send gnarly lines in remote areas at high speeds, no heli necessary- hence all the "human powered" trips documented in TGR films and the like. Its hard to know if the skiers/market drive the technology or if the industry responds to the consumer, a little of both I guess, but its cool to see the symbiosis of the technology available and the many facets of skiing progressing along side each other.
I think now we actually see a blending of disciplines more and more because people want to do whatever they want in whatever snowy condition they are presented with or seek out and the gear supports that. A Hall is a fucking sick skier in competitions and puts down some seriously creative maneuvers (he's just one example, there are plenty more). I've seen plenty of videos of people hitting BC booters, pillow lines, and charging big mountain lines on Shift bindings. That movie "Stray Dogs" was heavy on the swervature with no shortage of weird shuffle, revert things in pretty stout pillow lines, tricks no one would imagine seeing outside of the park like 5 years ago. The options are limitless these days, and the best skiers out there are pushing the boundaries thanks to the tech (and their own vision and skill of course).
I'm super hyped on where skiing is and where its going. Fuckin eh, its not just skiing, its FREEskiing, it'll always be dope.
