ButteredToast.I've heard it's a volcano, I don't think I would ski it. It seems unsafe.
For reals tho, this looks fun. Was filmed at Mammoth

Yeah!!!!
I have done plenty of laps on chair 5, it has some playful terrain, but he is skiing it on another level. Let's just say that I don't exactly ski it like that. Bernie Rosow is a Mammoth legend.
I did my ski bum years at Squaw, but in college I skied Mammoth about 25 days a year and now I am a 35 to 40 day a year weekender. I get a 3 day weekend up there every other weekend, and sometimes a two day weekend in between if it is particularly good. I usually do a couple of week long trips too. I absolutely love the mountain. It has fun steeps and the wind ensures that you really don't have to ski too many bumps, the steeps stay smooth. That wind can also turn pow on the top into wind buff, but overall I would say Mammoth has a very high percentage of fun days. I love Squaw, it will always be my favorite, but Mammoth is a bit more consistent. Even in a bad year it is pretty fun. Last year there were big storms in November which set the upper mountain up well, you could at least make good turns, before a miracle March. In a good or average year I would prefer Squaw, but in a bad year I would definitely prefer Mammoth. It is one of the most underrated mountains in the country, like others have said it is really only socal that visits. While I don't live there I would agree that it is pretty empty on week days. I would rather ski Mammoth than anywhere in Colorado other than Silverton, although I have not been to Telluride or Crested Butte. Mammoth also has a very long season.
I don't live there, but perhaps some of the locals can chime in on the housing situation. My wife and I get a ski lease every winter. From Nov 20 to May 20 us and three other couples rent a two bedroom condo, we can use it whenever we want. We have been renting the condo for a number of years, the owner likes our group. He uses it in the summer and rents it to us in the winter. I have heard VERY bad things about the housing situation for locals. Supposedly air bnb has led lots of property owners to rent things out short term, as opposed to long term. Housing has always been tough in ski towns, but now it is supposedly much worse. It is not just expensive for a ski town salary, it is also hard to come by. I would start to gain as much information and plan your move as soon as possible. Like I said, I can't really help, but some of the locals here might be able to offer some good advice. I just would not show up next December with no plan, in that case it won't be easy to make things work.
Good luck. Mammoth is one of the all-around mountains in the U.S.
