marty schwartz's older stuff is fantastic, learn the pentatonic scales it will change the way you even look at a guitar.

I never really watched any YouTube channels, and always just had an instructor. Face to face is usually easier

Definitely agree that face to face lessons are best, but Sean Daniel and samuraiguitarist both have some great lessons. CSguitars is awesome for learning about how your equipment works, and Adam Neely has a lot of really interesting stuff on music in general.

I play a 2005 American Series Telecaster. Super smooth neck and fretboard and a killer clean tone, especially in the neck position.

I’m like 98% self taught, I use ultimate guitar occasionally if I can’t figure out a solo. In my mind lessons are a waste unless you have a hard time learning by ear.

I'm guessing you're likely a beginner, purely because you're asking that question. If you're a beginner player you'll be just fine starting off on a $99 ebay special. If you have any local guitar shops that's great but don't let them oversell you.

A great guitar player will make a $99 guitar sound much better than an average player on a $2000 guitar.

Um, the guitar store? I'd do your research beforehand so you get a guitar you actually want. Like look at what your favourite bands are playing, etc. And don't go to overboard either, it's your first guitar.

the first two I used every day

the bass is mostly just for recording. the 8 string is a fun beginner 8 but it's a $500 so it's stock everything and doesn't sound too hot. and the rg7 I copped from my fleeing australian friend for $100 last month. it's pretty stock too but it's good for when people come over

I'm glad I didn't drop like $1200 on a good one. to me it was the same difficulties as getting used to a 7-string, but I listen to a lot more bands that use 7s than 8s, so it's arguably harder to get good at than a 7, with less songs (and easy songs) to help you get used to it.

probably took me a good 2-3 years of owning a 7 string to be able to just pick it up and write with it because all of your playing habits revolve around a different sized fretboard, different 3rds 5ths etc. and basically I am having the same problem with my 8 string but I'm way less motivated to get good at it. also tracking an 8 string with shitty bottom line ibanez pickups is a fucking nightmare. I've owned the thing for 2+ years and still don't really have any "go to" moves that don't sound hacky.


also drop C is only 1 step down guy, you can just tune your 6 down it takes about 44 seconds

sparknotes: it's cool but don't bother unless you want to dump years into getting good at it


edit: worth noting that I don't usually play guitar when the lifts are spinning from nov-may. stricly seasonal; so when I say 2-3 years that could be 6mo-1yr if you actually play a lot
