I rode up a lift with some dudes last year at A Basin who were blasting classic rock. Told em thank God someone actually is playing good music on those portable speakers and not some shit sounding ass rap no one wants to hear.

I’m not the supreme arbiter of music selection but I think that’s more than acceptable.

If you’re gonna be playing crowd pleasers or straight classics all day, have at it. Obscure edm and gutter rap/country is the no go zone.

like Christ I’m not gonna play my wu-tang in backpack speakers even if I like it. I don’t want a parent to have to explain to their child what “raw dog a bitch and dig in her purse” means. If everyone else has to hear it, it’s gonna be Black Sabbath/led Zep/CCR etc. A good rule is “would the loft play this on the deck speakers?”

that said I would probably just never use a speaker backpack bc it’s not my style

Lounge/ elevator music is always a nice go to, also doesn't hurt to take requests from the strangers sitting next to you - remember strangers are just friends you haven't met yet.

Why do people walk/bike/ski around blasting crap music at max volume on crap speakers? It sounds awful and nobody cares or thinks you are cool with the possible exception of middle schoolers.

I'm gonna say no. Because it is based on the premise that just because you like classic rock more than rap, that the others around you feel the same way, or that they even want to listen to music at all in that moment. I don't wanna hear your classic rock just as much as I don't wanna hear someone else's rap. Nothing wrong with listening to music while you ski, but please use headphones.

It's not about the content of the lyrics, it's about the fact that no matter what music you like, there will be someone nearby who doesn't like it and doesn't want to hear it. Even if the guy next to me on the lift was playing my favorite Deafheaven song, I still wouldn't want to hear it because when I'm skiing I like to enjoy the sounds of the mountain: snow falling through the trees, the lift creaking in the wind, edges on ice patches below, jerrys yard sale-ing into the fences. Headphones exist, there is no reason to make other people listen to music when they don't want to, it's rude.

This might be controversial, but I think lifties get a pass because they are working and representing their establishment. For example, at my neighborhood bars and coffee shops, the bartenders control the music. As employees they choose things to entertain themselves and also to represent their business. But it would be super weird if a customer came in with a speaker backpack and started blasting music, in fact, they would probably tell you that you were bothering the other customers and needed to stop or leave. I think the same thing goes at the lodge and the base areas: if the bars and restaurants and employees want to choose music for themselves and the guests, they should have the right to do so, but I think it is rude for a guest to come in blasting music. This is partly related to expectations. When I go to a bar or store, I expect that there might be music playing there and I don't expect to have control over it: I am at someone's business and they will choose the music for me. But when I am hiking or swimming or skiing, I am out in nature, and I don't think anyone has the right to set the soundtrack for me.

Regardless of your taste in music, you shouldn't be subjecting other people on the lift or run to it. A lot of the people I saw playing music on the lift in Utah were rich tourist kids playing awful pop music that for me totally ruined the ambiance and peacefulness of the mountain. Lifties can play music because they run the lift. Playing music in the park is cool too. But there is nothing worse than being stuck between two lifts with people playing music on them and you can hear both equally, or skiing a tree run and having some kid skid past you blasting some logan paul.

Ooo I just got an external speaker for skiing in my pocket, and I realized it got me way more laps in the tow park bc as I ski up, people stop and see where the sound is from and I just keep skiing through.

Couldn’t agree more. It’s not about what music is being played, but simply a matter of literally no one wants to hear your noise. It really comes down to respect for others. Blasting backpack speakers == no respect. I’m not saying you can’t do it, but it shows me that you don’t have a single care for those around you.

...till one of my friends wore one on a slushy spring day while I carried the brews in my backpack. Kept the vibes extremely high and people generally got a good laugh out of his disco/EDM playlist. 10/10 day, would bluetooth again

Blasting music is questionable at a resort. I will bring a Bluetooth speaker for a long sunny ascent and for beers at the top but that’s just with a few friends who I know and have an idea of their music tastes and it’s all good. Some hikes I’ve summited and there were other there so I switch to something mellow like the dead or something with no words or say in a dad like voice “the request line is open”

I've played a sort of game on the gondola at steamboat all season, if nobody talks within the first 3-4 minutes of the ride, I throw on a classic rock song on my phone.
I'd say 75% of the time someone else starts singing or compliments the song.
Makes me feel like its all about type of music not the noise, who doesn't want to get hyped before taking a lap?

I used to hate this... then my friends and I turned this into a points game at Troll. See points below, winner gets 1 item from the bar. You must witness the items below:

1 Point:
Alcohol containers on the hill
Speakers (Playing music)
LED lights on snowboard
Wipeouts (Downhill only, no points for park crashes)

Multiple points
1 point per item dropped upon wipeout (ski poles are each 1 point)
1 point per time the lift is stopped because of incorrect loading
1 point per person that doesn't successfully get off the lift at the top.

When playing multiple rounds go to 20 points to win.
