Ski boot help!

Hey team,

I've got a set of Full Tilt classics and Head Advant Edge. My problem with both is a big issue with fit as both don't lock in my heal and I'm flopping around inside both boots no matter how tight they are . They are both the right size so I was wondering if anyone could recommend a boot to check out that has pretty good heal lock?

There are quite a few good heel hold boots but it comes down to more then that. How is your medial arch, is it stable, how high is your instep, how much volume does your calf have. All this plays a role in heel hold. Best bet research some boot boot shops and go see what the fitter recommends for you. Take your old boots too as they may be able to work with what you have.

Yeah should have given more detail. Both boots have custom footbeds, my classics also have heal lifts and the advant edge have heal lifts and posting on the inside of the boot as it packed out way to much.

The only acceptable answer to this question is to go to a boot fitter and they will help you find the right size and shape for your foot. You can’t get the help you need online.

That's ultimately true, but it's worth noting that A) Not all boot fitters are going to put you in the best boot, for a variety of reasons, and B) If this person also has a wide forefoot (100mm+ last) then I can say with a good amount of certainty that there are only a handful of shells on the market which have wide lasts but very narrow heel pockets. YMMV.

That's a big IF. You've never seen this person's foot. I know people are trying to help, but if you are giving suggestions on boots to get without knowing what the person's foot looks like then you are not helping, you are just reinforcing their idea that they can solve this problem online.

I'm not suggesting that any particular boot is right for them and it's not as if the internet is totally devoid of wisdom on boot fitting, as much bad advice as there is. Going to a fitter is critically important, but they aren't silver bullets and can be wrong, as I've unfortunately found out on a few occasions. The knowledge I've tried to share about my experience is the kind of information that might have helped me avoid some of my own boot problems had I known it going into the search.

A FT Classic is a 98mm boot, and an Advant Edge is a 102mm boot. There is no way both are the right thing for you.

If you have custom footbeds and your feet are moving in the Classics no matter how tight they are, then are assuredly the wrong size for you.

Do this:
1. Remove the liner from the shell
2. Step into the shell while wearing a thin ski sock and slide your toes to the front of the shell so they are just barely touching
3. Examine the space behind your heel. 2cm = normal, 3cm (or bigger) is way too big and nothing will help you but buying the right size.

Thanks for the help everyone, the big issue is I have a sorta wide foot but my calf is pretty small so need something is a smaller heal pocket wish is hard to come by.

I didn't realize the FT classics had such a narrow last. Does it cramp the front part of your foot above the ball where your foot is wide? If not you may not have as wide a foot as you think. The Lange SX is pretty wide in the front but those Atomics and the Mach1's have narrower last versions (the LV and MV)

Yeah FT boots have traditionally been pretty narrow until they released the descendant. The pressure is all the way along my foot with no specific point.

Mine starts somewhere near my pinky toe and slowly spreads along the side of my foot and eventually to my other toes. If that sounds familiar then we're in the same boat. Aim to find the tighest heel pocket you can find. The widest part of your foot should be very snug but not painful with the buckles over top of the foot on the loosest setting. You may need either a mid or high volume shell to accommodate the width. If you need a narrow last to keep the whole foot snug but it's painful at the widest point, the shell could be punched out to make it a little wider. That said, if your problem is more numbness than outright cramping, the problem may just be that pressure over the top of the foot near the ankle is cutting off your circulation.
