What draws white males to action sports?

BTW this is a follow up to a thread I made last year which highlighted the need for diversity in skiing

After one year I have done my research, I asked around various communities, even invited people from said communities to come enjoy a day on the slopes with me. What I found was that these people just do not want action sports in their life. There were only few exceptions, and those exceptions were from my home indian reservation in Montana and I concluded that the only reason those injuns actually liked Snowboarding was because of their close proximity to ski resorts and snow nearly everybody from that reservation had been skiing and snowboarding enough to know how fun it actually is .

When I asked people from another indian reservation if they would enjoy going for a day skiing or snowboarding I got 0/20 to agree to spend a day on the hill. You may know the people from this reservation as employees at Mt Hoods infamous night ski area, all of those natives work at a ski resort but I do not know of a single one who enjoys to ski and snowboard regularly.

I also asked some african americans in the streets of Portland Oregon if they would ever try it out, a few said they would be interested but did not show the same level of enthusiasm as when I asked them to play a pickup game of basketball.

Well for starters you find snow more often in the north as well as more white people to the north too .. sounds like a geographic availability thing

I'm just gonna throw it out there that more black dudes play pro basketball and football than white folk is because they're faster and can jump higher. White folk play rich folk sports like golf, tennis, and lacrosse and your so called action sports because they daddies got like 5mil. So many more Hispanics in baseball because recruiting is on fire south of the border and has been for a while. Nascar is white because... rednecks.

It’s not the deep man. It’s not like minorities are specifically excluded from skiing like they were from normal sports decades ago.

Besides skiing being expensive as fuck, I think the lack of diversity in sking is more reliant on local demographics.

Probably (for skiing at least), the fact that white people make up the largest demographic of people in cold ass mountain towns. They pick it up really young and run with it, and get really fucking good at it. You can build a basketball court or a soccer field anywhere, so those sports are more of a melting pot. Also, there's the fact that commuting to the hill and paying for all the super-expensive gear and shit is a major barrier to people who live in bigger cities. There are plenty of non-honky skiers and snowboarders though.

Wierd thread, but I have encountered some stuff that is relevant. Back in HS, I had a lot of asian/brown friends, who I would try and get to come shred the local hill. None of them ever took me up on the offer, usually because their parents (1st gen immigrants) through that it was a pointless waste of time, and that my friends would be better off studying/doing more “normal” extracurriculars. Maybe immigrants are so focused on “making it” that they see activities that are done for personal enjoyment as irrelevant to life.

for basketball all you need is a basketball and some friends. Public courts are everywhere. Same for a pickup game of football, all you need is a football and some space.

for skiing you need a lot of money, a ski hill, all the proper clothing, skis, boots etc.

Location in terms of groups historically. People with darker skin in warmer climates. More diversity in cities, but also farther away from mountains. One of my buddies learned doubles at one point. He grew up 10 minutes from a resort though. Had him or any of us grown up in a city, probably not so much on the skiing. Also having lived in many mountain towns, they're pretty white. Some out west have a decent hispanic population but not very many blacks.

Women and men, no idea. More men seem to be into sports and "danger wicked extreme" type bullshit. I know girls who shred, but their are far less girls in the group all the time. Usually a token 1 if even.

I'm not sure pvc rails in my backyard and some snow on pallets counts as expensive.

I like skiing fast and eating ass, brother.

Most skiers I know ski because their parents are skiers too and got them into it at a young age, myself included. There are plenty of black and brown people today that could afford to go skiing, but that definitely wasn't the case back in the 60s and 70s when skiing was really blowing up and super visible in pop culture. Seems pretty rare for people whose parents weren't skiers to just pick up the sport.

I don't agree that it's just a geographical thing, sure Utah as a state is mostly white but SLC is very diverse and right next to world class skiing.

Also skateboarding is pretty diverse so I don't think you can lump all action sports together, each one has its own culture.

Most action sports are expensive and demographically white people live in the mountains. Skateboarding is a cheaper and more accessible action sport and thus you see a lot more diversity in it.
