I was watching a race practice and a girl fell pretty hard. She was having trouble getting up and the next one coming though didnt react in time and plowed right into her. The sound of the crash was Loud. Ski patrol had to haul them both away.

I was on the lift at Copper a few weeks ago when Lindsey Vonn was racing super G. She was BURNING and lowsided, banged her head on the ice, and slid fast into the nets bending her leg ALL FUCKED UP. Her ski had not released. She was screaming for help and the coach following her got to her and was unbending her leg as we passed over her.

All of us on the lift were just fucking silent. I thought for sure she was fucked but I followed up on her webpage and she posted a video saying her knee did not need surgery. Video is posted online its nasty.

Ski race crashes are gnarly

I haven't seen anything gnarly in person.

I don't see much but I hear all the patrol calls on the radio at work. always scary when people get a gross bleed or stop breathing.

These threads are kind of weird. All the stuff I wouldn't want to see or if I saw, would love to forget.

People get seriously fucked up or die at ski areas. Not all the time but it's a part of it. A risk we understand but not something worth dwelling on.

I guess I just never got threads about who's seen the most fucked up thing as if it's awesome.

I've seen a few that were scary but people walked away. Scariest was a jerry fly headfirst into the woods in an early season crash. Thought we'd be calling for a medivac or ambulance but he walked out and kept on going like nothing happened. Second scariest was watching two kids out at Mt. Hood fall off the first lift (Palmer?) at the bottom onto rocks from about 20 feet. They were shaken but OK after going to the hospital.

Despite being a ski racer, I haven't seen a lot of gnarly crashes where kids got hurt (knocking on serious wood here, I raced 20+ years so I'm quite lucky) in person. You don't really see any crashes unless you're sitting on the course or waiting at the finish. A friend of mine had a boot-top tib/fib break about 200 yards from the finish but I luckily didn't see that. She was merely skiing down and just hit a small bump or something and it snapped. No crash that preceded it or anything.

I've seen blown knees and the like but that's somewhat common.

You can just google ski racing crashes and some really gnarly ones come up. There is one of a guy who died somewhere online but you can find that yourself. Think his name was Reinstadler.

that one always sticks in my mind. his skis literally exploded (and at least one of his bindings didnt even release), it's hard to even imagine how that happens

Going down the cat track at Sunshine, I watched a little kid launch himself off the "ski out" and he landed in the valley 40 feet down. Broke his back and a leg I believe.

I have seen quite a few friends take knees to the chin causing the chin bone to rip through the chin skin. Oddly enough some of them bleed lots, others not so much.
Also, was skiing park early morning with some friends, we were the only ones hitting the jump line. Some french guy rolls up to us at the top of the park and asks "How fast" We say "pretty much straight, you can speed check it with one of us if you want?"It was about a 50 footer. He skis off arrogantly without saying anything, takes a few speed checks and lands perfectly on the middle of the deck. Couldn't see exactly what happened, but I'm guessing knee to the face. When I got to him his face looked like it exploded there was blood squirting everywhere. Pretty gross. shoulda listened I guess
