Whats up guys?

Looking to upgrade my set up a bit, and diversify a bit. I currently have a t2i with 8mm fish, 50mm prime, I just sold my 70-200L so need something to replace that. I have a Rode videomic, magic lantern on the T2i, editing with FCPX. Im coaching a freestyle team this winter, so I won't always have time to set up shots and whatnot, so I was thinking about adding a gopro with a gimbal, so I can just follow cam super close and stuff. Also think it would be sick footage. Whats the go pro set up these days? Never really played with one, but some of the footage looks pretty good these days..

Also would like to make the t2i a second camera and get a new A camera, I know they are old but I have had my eye on a HVX200a or possibly a HMC150, but at the same time dont want to get something that is too outdated and somewhat silly, the video quality and long lens ability seems nice on those. But a HC-X100 seems a lot newer and comparable price used. Thoughts on a camcorder under like 1.5K, closer to 1k.?

Irrelevantly I need to add some lenses for the t2i, for photog reasons and videography, thinking of getting the 11-16 tokina and possibly a 75-100 range lens.

Ideally, would be great to have the t2i and a camcorder for urban shots, so I can have one long lens and another fisheye or did angle. I feel like on the MTN, the DSLR can give me the nice DOF shots and more B roll stuff, but the camcorder can maybe be better for the action and guts of the videos? And then the go pro would be for messing around more, and when I want to get some gnarly follow cams?

Silly or decent idea?

Under 1k ideally for camcorder.. Then for lenses and dslr accessories(could use some ND filters and new backpack) 5-600(obviously more if i get more than one lens). Then bout 300 for go pro set up.


All down for used/refurb stuff, not worried about that.

I rented the 11-16 Tokina for a trip to the west coast last summer. Great lens, very heavy. If you do any astrophotography it's great for it. If you're looking for something in the 75-100 range you should look at the 85mm 1.8 prime. Suuuuuper sharp and will add some range without sacrificing quality from your 50mm. Can't speak to the gopro that much, have an older model that still takes great footy, but with no gimbal it's fairly shaky.

If your thinking about getting a Gopro then yes get one. This is by far the best one that they have released and I have been messing around with mine for about a month. The 4k stabilization and video quality are very superior to anything that I have seen previously of them. I have been using it without a gimbal or a Glidecam and it has preformed nearly like one but, if your using it every day I would suggest getting something. The timelapse and hyperlapse are much improved and the stabilization has made it a legit 8-10x better Then the previous model. In the past I have been waiting for a Gopro where I actually feel that my $400 is worth it and this is that camera. Picture quality is good also, definitely much better but probably similar to your t2i this is no 7k dollar camera here. The other suggestion is to get 5 batteries with it because, if your constantly filming with wi-fi then then you will definitely go through a few, even so it's still good to have extra because battery life should never impact what your trying to do.

Kinda been rethinking ,

Probally going to ditch the camcorder idea, if i find something for a steak i’ll grab it. Just not sure I want to spend too much cash in something that could be outdated pretty shortly if not already (hvx)

Which would be my best option for general follow cam esque shots, quick set up in the backcountry/woods.

11-16? Something with more zoom?

Then maybe i’ll grab a long lens, I loved my 70-200 F4, then sold it, but kinda want that again. Had some good range, just felt like often i was too close, and on my T2I I believe it is even more than 70-200 becuse of crop sensor?

My fisheye just looks like shit ImO and want to stop using it and the nifty fifty is just sometimes not versatile enough.
So some help on lenses.

I’m still thinking if grabbing the new gopro and a gimbal to get some gimbalgod esque shots haha.

Also just got a cheapo dslr gimbal thing to mess around with. Pain to balance, I haven’t gotten the right balance yet,,. ugh

If you're shooting on crop the 11-16 is great, personally on full frame i find my 20mm to be too wide. However i tend to shoot 4k, and edit in a 1080 timeline where I have the ability to crop in a bit.

you're correct in that 70-200 would be something like 1.5 due to apsc crop. more like 105-300.
If you can, its not a bad idea to just rent some different lenses for a day and see what you like. depending on the lens it would probably be 20-50 for a day..

Agree with this. I rented the 11-16 a while ago and loved it, felt really well built as well. Some people say it's throwing money down the drain because you don't keep it, but if you're making a long term lens purchase sometimes a test drive is necessary. The 85mm 1.8 is one of my favorite lenses too, but you'll run into the same versatility problem, also no stabilization built in. I've fallen in love with the clarity of prime lenses, so I might suggest even renting the 20mm or something along those lines.

Also check out Canon's 15-85. Great versatility and you can get it used for under 400. It's also got image stabilization, a big perk for video if you don't have a great gimbal setup
