Ok so I’m new on this site and I’m wondering how this works to buy say some skis? So more specific how does the deal go normally, it seems like it would be easy for someone to get ripped off! Like If I sent money to someone how do I ensure there sending the skis? If you guys could fill me in a little that would be appreciated

I bought a pair of skis and met up with the guy so it wasn't bad, but its a pretty close community, the seller wants the money and the buyer wants the skis, this forum isn't as hardcore as the TGR forums where you need to earn your trust, the site gives you the faith that you will be a productive part of the community. I would just say don't be the guy that scams, nobody likes it and also trust the great people that are on this site.

In my personal opinion, it isn't necessarily a bad idea but you need to be very careful and willing to assume a relatively high degree of risk(vs buying from a retailer for example). I would recommend checking out the comments on the member's profile before making payments/arrangements. If they have a good review(s) from previous transactions that is a good sign. The more good reviews, the better obviously.

Buying and selling through newschoolers is a lot like using the ski racks at the resort - generally safe but is not 100% scam-proof. Generally speaking, most people on this site are looking to help each other out but unfortunately things happen.

If you are looking into a safer alternative I would suggest local ski swaps or buying used from local shops.

Check user feedback in profiles. Legit sellers often have a lot of positive feedback from previous buyers.

If they are a new seller, be a little more careful. Try to pay them through a medium with buyer protection like paypal or have then send you some extra photos to verify they actually have the items. Maybe ask if you can pay half up front and the rest when you receive the item.

In general, 99% of sales here are legit and in good faith. If someone is scammed, a callout thread is usually made (along with leaving feedback in their profile) to shame the person, warn others, and hopefully try to recoup lost money.

Also, read some of the stickied posts at the top of the sell/trade forum. Some good info in those

Personally I would only buy skis/ expensive things off of someone who has both posted on NS a fair bit, has some feedback, and has their social medias linked in their profile. That way I could at the very try to least go after them if pay pal didn't work out for me.
Feel it out, if they feel sketchy and avoid questions then don't bother risking!

I tend to not buy from anyone with less than 2 years on the site and less than 50 posts. Most of the time you aren't going to get ripped off. In today's world it is not difficult to find someone who scammed, and with forums being dead there's no point in scamming on a forum once. There aren't many left and if someone does scam they will quickly be ostracized.

in my opinion you should def pay this guy to show you how to use the site before you make any major transactions. he really helped me understand the site when i first joined but take a risk if you want man.

I've spent a decent chunk of change over the years on NS and similar forums.



How to not get scammed:

1.) Look at the profile of the person you are thinking about buying the product(s)
2.) Don't be dumb
3.) Determine if they are legit or not
4.) Use PayPal but never do 'Family/Friends' so you can chargeback if needed
5.) Document everything
6.) If it seems too good to be true, it probably is.

Use your brain if you’re buying off of here. If a deal is too good to be true, be cautious. If the person selling created their account 3 days ago be cautious. Use PayPal (there is a chargeback feature that lets you get your money back if you’re scammed). It’s pretty safe tho cause NS is a pretty tight nit community

The couple times I bought some stuff on NS i always exchanged numbers with the seller and talked with him.

send message asking for their paypal/venmo link, include your shipping information
send payment and confirm sale
receive tracking info within 3 business days



We love hunting down disrespectful members. So if you get ripped off we can send someone to their local ski hill to beat em up

Check profile for feedback about transactions. Be wary of someone with no feedback and few posts.

Too many posts. Didn't read. Use paypal and select the option for purchase protection. It costs a little more but worth the piece of mind.
