Fellas, Kalen Thorien is pretty frickin awesome like she’s a total badass..... but anybody know why she’s so famous, is it just good marketing??? I can’t find but like 4 videos of her actually skiing, what’s the deal I just gotta know!! (Ps I want to ski wit her cause she seems legit and I think we’d be best pals, so if you know her tell her that I must ski with her, tanks pals)

Tried this in lady Gabber with no luck

I've looked her up. I think the reason no one knows who she is is because she doesn't have a single ski edit. All I can find are advertisements where she's skiing groomers or videos where she doesn't ski. Maybe that works for some people where all they want to see is a good looking chick talk about how she's a pro skier but doesn't care if she actually puts out edits. That doesn't work here. No one gives a rats ass unless you show you shred.

She kills it as not only a skier but also as a content creator and influencer. She has over 130K followers on instagram but not everyone is there because of her skiing. She's been fortunate enough to build a life around adventure, whether it be skiing, camping, or even travelling the continent on her motorcycle. Look at her instagram, everything is extremely well curated, all images are crisp and visually appealing and most importantly, everything tells a story.

As far there not being many edits of her skiing, she doesn't need to produce edits because she's more than just a professional skier.

If you aren't marketable, there's no reason for a company to back you. Skiing itself used to be enough but it's not anymore. Sponsorships are part of the marketing budget for brands, if you can't help them, they sure won't help you.

There are plenty of great skiers out there that don't have ski or clothing sponsors because they are not marketable. Halfpipe skiers are the first to come to mind... some of these athletes are X-Games contenders, World Cup winners, etc... and no one will sponsor them.

What makes her "badass"? She doesn't sound very interesting. Is she just some basic Insta model that little girls look up to even though she just is a pretty advertisement?

First, she hit up a bunch of people trying to get photos and exposure. Then, she got lucky with a few photographers and got some coverage/publicity which translated into further film and photo opportunities.

For film she was in Warren Miller's Line of Descent, has been in a lot of Salomon TV episodes, some REI short films, and other short edits.

For photography, she has a lot of covers as well as advertisements from 2012 onward.

She isn't some ex-racer/freestyler who turned to big mountain/backcountry skiing as they got older, she just got really lucky she could ski, was photogenic, good looking, and interesting. Similar story to Sierra Quitiquit and Caroline Gleich if you ask me. Those two have a little more in terms of skiing background but not much.

On a side note, I saw her in the SLC airport last year on my way to a conference. If I had asked for a bigger car with more space I probably would have asked if she wanted a lift to at least the Goldminers Daughter. I think she lives in LLC or near it. Yeah I think she must be pretty smart to start off the way she did, but yeah lucky too.

She’s a a pretty rad person seems like, or at least she markets herself well....

I hate when people say that. Not just ski wise, just In general. Is she smart? All she really was ask photographers who were probably in same boat as her as far as exposure goes and one of them came out and took pics. Explain to me the smart part about. I can't imagine she's the first to do it and anybody could. Infact I wouldn't doubt you could do this winter, shit if your ugly just wear a face mask. That's not hard or intelligent.

Well you have to look at the fact that if it wasn’t that hard everyone would do it... most definitely she’s using some sort of out of the box thinking that most people are either too lazy to pursue or not intelligent enough to come up with on there own..... I think rarely are you just “lucky” with sponsorships like hers, and she is definitely more driven than your average joe, which in my opinion puts her heads above anyone in this generation or the ones before…

You gotta think a little out of the box, I agree. This is like that girl that made it into the Olympics and all she could do was a alley oop 180, it wasn't overly smart. She was given the rules and she worked out a hike in them.
