I am a marina manager. It's the job that I've always wanted and I'm just finishing up my first year as the big boss man. Feeling pretty lucky to be where I am at 28. I graduated with a parks, recreation, & tourism degree so I am in my field. Plus I get to make my own hours in the off season (now through March) so I can ski a lot.

I love my job and I feel very lucky to enjoy going to work everyday.

Career update.

Really happy with how it went, played a bunch of gigs around Brisbane which was great and I improved a tonne, but now I'm back home for the holidays and away from all my uni mates which sucks ass. Playing about 2 gigs a week with average pay ($75Aud for 3 hours) as a duo. Also playing some big gigs at a festival called Woodford Folk Festival, and another with a band called Cheap Fakes.

Not really feeling motivated to practice my instrument at the moment though, and I really just want to do a season this year. Not gonna happen though. Me and my mate are hanging with some friends in BC for a couple weeks in february so I might try to do my Ast then and get into the backcountry here in Aus and in BC.

Worked on a golf course all summer, got hurt, finished out the season, and now gonna be a ski coach this winter.

I wouldn't say I dont have a purpose in life rather I haven't found my calling yet towards anything and im interested in studying various topics in school (argronmery or brain injuries) when I go back next summer after a hiatus, but for right now I'm pretty happy. Its a ski team I grew up skiing and competing with that taught me a great deal of stuff and was one of the most positive impacts on my adolescent life so just to be able to return the favor, regardless of getting paid to show kids how to ski/ski with them, is a pretty unique opportunity.

I’ve done a bunch of random things. But for how I could afford a year of skiing everyday. I saved money while in the army then did some construction over the summer, then did snowmaking in the winter (until Christmas). Then skied the rest of the year.

skiP.E.I.I'm a ski bum. I've done most of the jobs that keep a ski hill going, primarily ski instructing and park building.
Now and then I sell a piece of art. Occasionally I do a photography gig. I'm working towards doing more of these.
Overall I'm an itinerant skilled labourer.

How do you get a job in park building?

Best way into day staff or grooming is snownsking imo. Especially at one of the bigger resorts. The big places hire rookies every year grooming and run large day staffs.

Snowmaking ususlly ends m end of Dec to mid Jan and then you can swing into another department. For cst you can do some ride alongs and get to know the grooming crew a bit while making snow and get your name up the list for when it ends. Parks just stay on it with the manager and chat to the day staff sometimes. Can be difficult to get that first season sometimes. Not being a piece of shit worker is a good way to stay around. Doesn't sound that hsrd but apparently it is. If you don't want to work, find another job.

Also doing snowmaking helps because a lot of times somebody woll get hurt or fired by the time you finish and a spot or two will open up. Also if you can make snow and not be too horrible theres a chance you might not be the laziest worker on day staff.

I would also say to apply to multiple places, especially if looking to only do parks or grooming. Any machine op experience and or mechanic skills is a plus. Day staff gets flooded with apps sometimes. Everyone and there mom applies so getting that first year can be tough. Introduce yourself to the park guys at the local hill and see if they have a slot or can get you in next season.

If you go the cat route off the bat youll be grooming trails for a while to learn. At the bigger mtns pack grooming. Trails isn't bad though. I just did a summer of it. Any time in the machine is good honestly. Need them hours of experience.

Some mtns run specific night hand crews as well. We run 2 people 5 days a week on swing specifically setting/moving rails. That can be a good gig if you hate the day life and or aant to get in a cat eventually. Can ususlly pick up some trainingif youre a decent worker.

Idk parks can be hard work but I like it. The ski industry is a small world, terrain parks are a sliver of that. Everyone knows everyone and people do talk to each other. If you do score a job, do decent work and dont burn that bridge. If you use that gig to score a job somewhere else tou want a decent reference. If you fuck up at a few mrns in a row, nobody will want to deal with you.

It's not a hard job imo, its a fun job, you just need to be a decent worker, pay attention, and be self motivated for gettting things done without direct supervision.

If you go for it I hope you have a good season. I love it and can't see myself doing anything else. I did 14 seasons between day staff, park sup, and night rail sets, and then I'm on my 4th season grooming parks, and did early season snowmaking my last couple years. Maybe you love it, maybe it's not your jam but why not give it a whirl. Worst case you get a new experience, learn a few things and have a fun season.

I tried to be a ski bum after college (BS civil engineering), but I tore my ACL. So I had to find a job that would pay the bills and took the first reasonable offer. Ended up moving from Golden, Colorado to San Diego, now I'm all healed up and ski bear every other weekend. Strangely a lot of the Denver engineering firms are in centennial (south east Denver), or boulder. So had I stayed in Denver or lived in boulder close to an engineering firm I would probably only save 30 minutes on my drive to the mountains.

How do you like San Diego? One of my HS buddies is considering it along with like, 6 other potential citites to live in. Surprised to hear it's not too far from the mountains.

Gotta enjoy my last couple days as a 'professional skier and an anomoly in the Vail empire' before I become a construction estimator again.

Before skiing distracted me in mid November I was in the process of lining up some good sales lines and companies to represent independently (commission only) I should go that route but I don't have it in me. Just sucks because I pretty much know what I am doing and would get 3-4 primo lines (one major glass line to go after every big tower for the curtainwall and a few other cool ass commercial building products) and in the long run make bank but I don't have it in me to deal with the ups and downs. I'm gonna try and psych myself up for it over the next couple days but I will probably get the closest estimating job to my place in Boston with the least amount of traffic driving. I'm not taking shit though if I don't get them to agree to 4 x 10s a week Fridays off/remote I'll answer emails and at least 70 base with bonuses for any projects I proactively bid and win.

I am load controller, responsible for weight and balance of civil aircrafts. I am decide what will be loaded where in aircraft, make loading instructions and send it to loading team. Once the aircraft is loaded, I prepare documents for captain so he can set up aircraft properly for takeoff. It is interesting job, but lot of stress...

It's alright, I like the people in colorado better. The ski season is also pretty short here. If I were to do it over. I probably would have tried to live in Salt Lake. The highways leaving denver are too crowded to get to the mountains in a reasonable time. San Diego is just far, and the mountain is only good if you ski park. It's also harder to find people to ski with in socal. It felt like everyone in colorado was really about skiing/ the outdoors.
