What up NS,

My name is Zach and i'm an environmental professional/ski bum living in Crested Butte, CO. I've lived in CB for a little over 8 years and have been working for local environmental nonprofits for the last 7 years. As a little side project, about two years ago I started sewing custom fleece hoods out of my garage. The hoods took off locally, and I started a headwear company called knucklehead. I wanted to share our products with the NS community. We sew two different fleece hood patterns - the Cletus (that fits over a helmet) and the Classic (our take on the classic fleece hood). All of our hoods are hand sewn in Colorado, and are made using recycled Polartec 200 weight fleece. This year, we offer both styles of hoods in four colors - black, white, rust orange, and light blue. We also make hats and hoodies.

Sustainability and authentic snow sport culture is at the heart of our mission as a company. Our company is modeled after B Corporations, and as such we donate 10% of our GROSS sales at the end of each year to a non-profit that is tackling environmental issues - mainly Climate Change and water availability in the west; last year we donated to POW.

Honest question: did you read the description?

The Knucklehead hoods are made by hand in the U.S. Based on that alone, I'm honestly surprised they're not more expensive. Burton's hood is $24.95 and based on the fact that it says "imported," I can almost guarantee that it was made in Asia, and probably with labor that costs less than a third of what it'd cost here.

Then there's the volume aspect. Burton probably makes thousands of those hoods for around $5 a piece (and that's a high estimate).

Add on to that the fact that Burton is using a proprietary material, and there's another significant cost-cutter. The Polartec fabric Knucklehead uses is expensive, especially when you're not buying in it large quantities.

So for $30 you get a Made-in-USA, hand-sewn fleece hood that is made with high-quality, reputable materials. And it's made by small company that's run by a skier and that donates some of their earnings to organizations who are making an effort to combat the issues that directly impact skiing.

Apologies for the rant, but seeing as many people don't understand the supply chains of apparel, I figure it'd be a good opportunity to shed some light on why things cost what they do.

You totally missed the point, didn’t you? I won’t try to explain it better because Luke literally made it clear as crystal. There are more reasons than CHEAP to buy certain products. Also, 30$ is NOT expensive.

Burton mass produces their garments somewhere in Asia where it is made by people in economic slavery. Mass produced textiles almost always have manufacturing defects on some level because quality control is lax, the workers don't care about the end result and the cheapest materials are used.
Burton is a giant company that contracts for millions of units to be made. They don't care how an individual piece comes out or if a single customer has a complaint. Buying from a smaller business, making the product is more a labour of love, and each sale is more important, so there is a vested interest in keeping the customer happy. Also buying from knuckleheads, the money is supporting someone on NS who is a skier being paid a living wage, rather than a mega corporation which doesn't give a flying fuck about skiing and takes advantage of nearly free labour in a country lacking labour standards or human rights.
Just from looking at the pictures, these knucklehead hoods are a different design than the burton- the fabric is sewn at different points, he uses cinch straps on the side instead of laces in the front like on the burton one. And he's using polarfleece made from recycled plastics instead of new materials. Also the adult size burton hood ranges i price from $30-$60.

As far as the helmet hoods, those are sweet. Are there any photos of riders wearing em, OP?

Thanks for asking, we are currently trying to figure out a way to sell outside of the US, but it's pretty dang expensive with shipping and customs, so for now we are only focused on selling to the USA. We hope to have something figured out in the next couple months. Sorry, but thanks for the interest and kind words.
