teamSESHOne time I wasn't wearing a helmet all day and it got windy out of no wear. My hat wasn't cutting it so I threw a helmet on and literally the first run I end up catching an edge on a picnic table I was hitting all day with no issues. I was going really fast so when I landed on the the table to lipslide it I instantly flipped onto my side and cracked my head against the table.
I cracked my helmet and had a concussion but if I didn't have my helmet on I think I could have died or something. It was a solid and sudden slam.
I also broke a pole later... one end stuck into the snow and the other straight into my balls. I got off of a tube I wasn't locked into and wasn't able to move my pole out of the original position I had it in (while on the tube). Ski patrol thought I had internal bleeding. I was so afraid to look down my pants but luckily I was fine. It was a rough day.

Not_GoodMy buddy cut his head open pretty bad one day. He usually wears a helmet but decided to take it off cuz it was spring and the snow was soft. He caught an edge, ejected, and managed to slam his head on his ski.
Kind of a freak accident but I definitely dont go out without a helmet
teamSESHDid they cut your pants?
Not_GoodNot me, just realized that he has his boots on but no snowpants, weird.
teamSESHMaybe that's how he skis. I've seen a kid riding Magnus 90s in short shorts a couple of times at my local hill. It's dat new new wave.
XxAc1DtR1PxXJust buy a Smith maze you'll never even feel it on your damned head plus with mips you're gonna keep your noggin safe.

toastHelmet for me, but it kind of bugs me when people are self-righteous and talk down on people who choose not to wear em. It's a personal choice.
SofaKingSickTotally agree with this though. The entire sport is contrived danger for no good reason.
The thing that swings me on the helmet is that the brain isn't like the rest of the body, its mysterious and can be badly damaged super easily in some cases
ButteredToast.Doesn't heal either. Enough slams and your risk for ALS/CTE increases quite a bit.
It's easy to say "I don't wanna live that long! Live fast die young!" when you're young, but I guarantee you it will be a bummer when you can't still ski in your 50's because you have a jalopy brain that can't control your limbs from bonking your melon.
Of course, you could be fine and never slam your head super hard, but why take that risk when helmets are so warm and comfy nowadays?
twea.kerlast year i kinda stopped wearing a helmet in the park at bush, and it was almost entirely because I saw older, better skiers without them. It was the first time in a while i felt like i was negatively influenced by older kids (lmao) not like a peer pressure thing but i just stopped wanting to wear it. Flash forward to this season and I have this really vivid dream. Im hitting this urban feature and i slammed, pretty hard i guess but i walked it off. later on though I am walking around and feel this sharp pain on my head. i feel it up and see theres blood on my hand. I go to look in a mirror and when i pull my hair back my head looks like someone dropped a melon on the ground. I mean my entire forehead was split open. I woke up and think to myself "I think im gonna wear my helmet today." Skied a handful of days since with it on and im starting to get used to it. Anyone else have any stories where they were inspired to wear a helmet that wasnt directly related to skiing.
teamSESHMIPS is a waste of money if you wear a beanie and your goggles strap under the helmet though. Is there anything I should look for that’s more safe if I prefer having my Yoke hood or a beanie on? I know it’s best to not do that but I really prefer it.

IsitWinterYet17If the safety appeal of a helmet doesn't matter to you, consider the cost of an ED visit, or even worse if your injury and vitals qualify you as a level 1 or 2 trauma. We're talking $10-50k just for the ED part and even more if you need surgery or hospital stay.
Not wearing a helmet is like playing Russian roulette with your life and your wallet. Even low speed impacts to the head can be devastating sometimes.
teamSESHDoes it stand for emergency department?
adamwolynMy parents always forced me to wear a helmet to the point it became instinct as a kid. When I was about 10 or 11 I was racing some friends on a ski cross course and my skis got tangled up with my friends right on a bank. We both couldn’t turn and went straight off at full speed. I went flying in the air and landed flat on my stomach and passed out for god knows how long. I kept replaying the incident in my head like a dream until I finally woke up to the reality. If I wasn’t wearing a helmet I would be severely impaired taking an impact like that as a little kid. That impact probably was for the better cause now I always wear a helmet unless there’s no park and I’m just cruisin. For me, if I’m not wearing a helmet for whatever reason, I have to ski at 50%. No spins no flips. I just can’t take the risk. So having a helmet gives me that confidence to try new tricks and go hard. It’s really hard to even try a blind 2 without one even if I haven’t hit my head hard in almost a decade.
It’s kinda like walking on a sidewalk without guardrails over the Grand Canyon. You’ve never fallen off a sidewalk before in your life, but it just feels like such a risk to try something like that.
DesertStixYou ski flag?
adamwolynI used to. Now I’m in Berkeley and ski boreal. I still get a few days at snowbowl over winter break tho
DesertStixI would def come back this winter break. Not sure if you’ve kept up with them on IG but they are getting DUMPED on like crazy
adamwolynWord I haven’t but now I’m hyped

WalkaI don't think there is any real data to suggest MIPS does anything.
SEABURNno helmet is like no condom. more fun, but a lot more risk.
