I started skiing without poles for the first time

Why the fuck did I ever use those annoying things

It feels like I'm surfing, grabs are soo much easier, I can get on the lift and not worry about em and access all my pockets way easier. Plus my arms don't get fatigued after holding those heavy things after a day's skiing

No poles crew

This is new and exciting....

I have personally noticed way less back pain, probably due to this. Also when I bail now I don't need to worry about getting impaled

I was poleless almost all of last season, but this season for some reason I find myself reaching for the poles more and more. I actually like my footy with poles a lot more than poleless because I really don't know what to do with my hands and it shows in landings and on rails. That being said some tricks just dont feel right with poles like hand drag slides or safety slides.

I think it really depends on what Im doing on a given day. If Im bombing trees, steeps, drops, etc. and just flowing through the park at the end of every lap I'll pick up the poles. If Im trying really hard to get a specific clip or just want to swerve it I'll ditch em. Dont lock yourself in either way

CharlzHubI froth no poles crew in the park and for hot laps. But as soon as you ski some steep shit or powder or sidecountry or whatever, you look like the biggest fuck on the mountain


Yo you need to check out LSM then. He goes no poles in pow sometimes and it’s my favorite thing to watch. He just put out Yugen. Check it out

If I am trying to ski good I use poles but other than that they are just a determent to me. My arms feel more free and I never have to worry about how tight I'm turning because I have an excuse. The little time I do spend in the park is always no pole, they just feel wrong and get in your way on boxes. Although the first (kinda) trick I learned was a kosack so I guess they got me into park.

You need poles to get on a lift w/out looking awkward? Why? Just leave em at the base or top of the park or something, anywhere works.

I am the 99%. I still think skiing is fun as fuck tho, so I'll probably keep doing it with and without poles. Sorry for bothering you!

I only use poles for the lift lines. I skied without them for two years and I started again because i felt bad for running into people in the lift line. They are also handy for when I ski anything that isn't park.

I raced from the first year i was old enough to sophomore year of HS when I got a job on the park crew at my local hill. We spent a lot of time outside of the course without poles because you shouldnt need them to make edge to edge turns. I agree, they make anything more than 6 inches of freshies a lot less work to get down. And anytime I find myself skiing trees I wish I had them. I also think they can influence park style and footage CAN look better with them, especially if youre doing grabs. That aspect of it is definitely harder and something I notice when watching edits. Wearing poles has advantages and disadvantages so as far as im concerned there is now way to say it is easier with or without them. Spending most of my time in the park I tend to ski without them. Anyone who thinks skiing without poles looks dumb is just watching a skier who is lacking adequate style, wearing poles wont inherently make their skiing look better. I think wearing poles has become a staple of the "old wave" style and when people do old wave tricks (staple park tricks) and aren't using their hands in ways they couldnt with poles then yea I guess it doesnt look as good. That being said if someone is learning tricks and feels awkward with poles they shouldnt feel like they should have to use them. I love skiing without poles

Definitely makes it harder on that stuff, but its fun as hell no matter what. I skied no poles last season pretty much all resort days with a few exceptions, and skiing trees and bumps was a little harder but it left more room for creativity in my opinion.

In the park theres no reason for poles but I think it adds some steez. Anywhere else especially woods or moguls there so necessary.

Just checking in that karma pulled up with all the smoke today after I was lucky enough to be one of the first people to enter a 3 foot deep black that mountain ops cut the ropes on like 15 minutes prior.

After my dumbass statement above, I was fully pitted for like 30 minutes until ski patrol came and literally dug me out. My poles were sitting behind a tree in the terrain park... :/

Poles are superior for skiing the big shit at revelstoke and its not even close. WTF was I thinking trying to go no poles down some big steep powdery chutes.

but fr, i look more stylish with poles and i find rail tricks easier. i use some old bamboo poles i found at home that is a bit over my hip in length.

Except the OP basically went back on the premise of the thread by deciding that yah, for skiing out of the park, and doing it well. Poles are a pretty necessary component.....nerd.

If you can’t use your edges to make a proper turn you shouldn’t be using poles at all.

So if anything it’s probably good these kids have stoped using poles. One of my go-to exercises/tips when someone asks me for skiing advice is to leave their poles at the top of the hill and go take some laps with their hands on their knees. It forces them to get their weight forward and use their edges.

I’ll go no poles from time to time partly because it is a good way refresher drill and mainly because mobing down the hill without poles is super fun.

No poles means no stops though, and ideally lots of mogul boosting

I just don't rock poles anymore in the park because I took a pole to the nuts when I got off a tube at a weird angle. Worst pain ever. I was going so fast the pole snapped (thank goodness). Also it makes me ski in a more aggressive style that I enjoy.

Everywhere else I like poles better (for the most part). I will bomb groomers around without them if I'm doing a lot of jibbing and presses/butters though.
