East Coast vs West Coast

The whole east coast culture of "fuck the west coast" and "we don't need no mountains" is cool and all but west coast skiing is so much better. For one the conditions are so much better on the West Coast, early season is fresh pow out west compared to man made spring like conditions up in Maine. The terrain gets old in East, there is hardly any back country or powder days other than Vermont and rarely New York. Overall there is really nothing you could do out East that couldn't be done better out West.

Aside from a higher snow making system potential because of the much higher precipitation content, yeah west is way better.

I don't think anyone genuinely believes East Coast is better so it's not even a discussion most people care about.

If you live in the East you ski what you've got, you'll have fun either way.

Well, West Coast skiing is actually much different than 'West' skiing like CO. True West Coast skiing like up at Mt Baker, Crystal Mtn or Schweitzer is known for tons of heavy mash potato snow that will tear you up once it gets choppy, chances it can rain to the summit any time during the season and if your lucky only a handful of bluebird days with a good amount of whiteout "Please God let us find the trees before we hit that cliffband" days.

Yeah usually early season usually sucks on the east coast but it's snowed 5 feet so far at Sugarloaf this season

Have you heard of the Chic Chocs? There is great backcountry skiing all over New England, Quebec, and Newfoundland. Also a lot of older ski hills on the east coast have super old hand cut runs that are so different and fun compared to modern day ski runs that are usually just bulldozed. Night skiing is also a lot more common.

Yeah the skiing out west is generally better but on the east coast you don't have 50 year olds complaining at the bottom of the lift on the phone that everything is tracked out even though it's still dumping. The attitude is way better on the east coast in general because it's not a famous ski destination where people will always complain if it's not perfect.

The east coast had the goods early this year. Also places very. The east has everything from 100' vert mountains practically at sea level to 3500+ elevation mtns with decent snow.

I like things about both. Generally the places I've lived out west we get far more snow, and dryer snow than the east. That said I've ridden some icy shit out west and dry waist deep pow in the east. The east is more populated with your community type mom and pop establishments too. The guy running the lifts has been there for 15 years and will come back every year till he's dead. Your friends work there, you've worked there. The lady that taught you how to ski 20 years ago still works there. Some mountains out west have that vibe, but the East coast is way more populated with those types of establishments.

Even though I've been working parks for 16 seasons I've always considered myself more of a freerider. But even then there's something about those east coast mountains that will always hold a special place in my heart. Maybe it's nostalgia, maybe it's stupidity, but there's a joy skiing some of those smaller, easily overlooked hills that I just don't get at the bigger resorts.

The East coast skier is more seasoned from ice and any other kind of condition you can think of. Rain is considered a foggy day and powder days are any day there is snow (although they get absolutely nuked with snow up at Jay). Even wind chills at -25 are considered moderately cool at some places and one might call 0 balmy at Wildcat in the dead of January.

Most west coast skiers cant hang with East coasters because they are not built to ski anything in the worst of conditions. Anyone form the east coast will tell you that skiers from the east are a different breed that can take anything that comes their way. A lot of the time people talk about ice calling it ice coast and what not which is not wrong. However there are many days we are still out there at Wildcat or Cannon with winds in the 40-60mph range and windchills approaching -40 degrees F. If you can ski on a day like that then a day at Mammoth is merely laughable. Lets not forget that the wind across from Wildcat on mount Washington has been clocked at 235mph and is home to what is considered the worst weather on earth. Overall east coast skiers are a low key cult that grew up skiing in variable conditions and live to ski in those conditions which makes them some of the most determined and well rounded skiers on the planet. Some of the worlds best skiers are from the New England states which are just as much a pro skier factory as the west.

For those of you that look down on the east you're making the biggest mistake especially when saying we get now powder. Yes we have a great deal of ice but in 2017 Jay Peak received 492in which is actually more then places like Whistler, Vail, mammoth, Kirkwood, Cooper, Jackson, Aspen, Big sky, PC, Breck and Telluride. Don't knock our snow until you've tried it. this does not just include Jay But many others including Stowe, Burke, Killington, Mad River Glen, Wildcat and Cannon all have comparable amounts of snow annually.

Another thing is that the birthplace of US skiing took place in the northeast and the first uphill lift was a rope tow in Woodstock VT. The oldest ski shop in America is Lahouts which is in lincoln NH near Loon and Cannon mtns. Skiing runs deep through the vains of New England and is the heart of its winter identity. Talking down the east coast is an very large and false assumption that has been made over the years when in fact it has some of the best skiing in North America.

You forgot to mention how much it RAINS ON THE WEST COAST!! I can't tell you how many times I think it's gonna be a powder day and then it's just raining when we arrive super early. Can't wait to move to Summit County CO, so much better there!!

If you're thinking of moving soon, Utah and Colorado are MUCH BETTER options so you get lower temperatures more consistently. Also, the cost of living is so much more expensive on the West Coast.

Unless there's absolutely no snow and the east has tons, there really is no fair comparison. The west is better. But either way, you get to ski, which is better than what a lot of people get.

The terrain is just better and more expansive in the west. Its another scale. Thats not to say there isn't an awesome ski culture in the east or that there's good skiing.

Ask yourself this: what skier has ever moved from west to east for skiing compared to how many do the opposite?

i feel like east coast skies are more gritty and scrappy. like they aren't fruitcakes if you know what i mean. east coast and particularly midwest skiers don't got much to work with, so they hit sketchy rails, throw down on shitty jumps, and aren't afraid to ski in so called "less than par conditions". i got a lot of respect for east coast and midwest skiers, they got a lot of heart to them and really know how to huck tricks and got greasy as hell styles. utah and colorado skiers are soft as fuck, and to be blunt are a bunch of pussies to say the least. they ski soft, cant throw down on rails, and try to imitate the exact same style as everyone else around them. west coast skiers just have no originality or personality for that more too them. and im not even from the east coast or the midwest, im from texas.

I always think of the east coast mountains as being depressing compared to rocky mtn resorts.
I would feel a sense of longing for colorado if i had to work at a cold icy east coast resort. Tree sking sucks on the east coast too. And tree runs in pow are the best part of skiing

It’s unquestionably true that skiing out west is better than east coast.

I’m from the Midwest and I hear people complain about western resort conditions all the time, or the resorts themselves. When I get out there I’m just happy to be nuking down wide long groomers even when it’s a day with bummer conditions.

It’s just so much better than the shitty 500ft vertical I’m used to and it’s nice to be able to have a blast on crappy days when everyone else is just complaining.

Most people here are just skiing rails anyways. It doesn't matter where you are if you are just skiing park (for the most part). Obviously if your goal is pow and BC then the West is waaay better. I'm in the Midwest and I'd be happy to take a trip out to either coast but I couldn't see myself planning a random vacation to the East. We have rails and ice already.

Its like me only skiing Keystone and saying Colorado sucks. (Sorry i had to)

The goods are out there for those that put the effort in.

Id also argue that the hardcore back country culture is just as strong - if not stronger based on the hardship of finding the goods.

Grew up skiing the east , still live here and do but love the west , I think it’s a dumb arguement , the west is bigger in all ways , gets more snow for longer , but the east is great too we have pow but not as often as out west especially south of VT
One thing I will say without a doubt , east coast skiers are built to stand all conditions , and biffing our hardpack and ice , I’ll say from personal experience left my entire hip black , that don’t happen in powder , which is a point for out west pow makes soft landings

i can assure you, that there are exactly "0" people saying "Fuck the West Coast" while shredding all season on dark days in brown slush... even if we're in VT!! Everyone STILL cant get over how much better everything is out west.

-The legal weed,
