DIY tech toe inserts?

I just bought new resort boots and am wondering if I could just drill some holes for compatibility with a shift or cast binding system? I know cast will do toe inserts on your boots but I haven’t seen their process or any actual finished product. If anyone has done diy toe conversions or knows about toe compatibility please chime in!

You deft cannot just drill holes in your boot. Cast used to glue in metal inserts. I feel like the toe pins would just eat away at your boots if you tried to tour without inserts and the binding would probably come off also if you tried to skin anything steep. Also could affect the binding working in ski mode properly.

There are a ton of alpine style boots with inserts these days...

I’ve got new Atomic Hawx Ultras and Dalbello Aspects. I’d probably do the aspects since they’ve got walk mode on em

If you were getting the ultras why didn't you just get the XTD?

Eh, I'd really recommend having CAST do it. Theirs are super super clean and professional. Trying to do this at home to brand new boots is a really bad idea. This is the sort of thing that really would screw you over when it failed.....

Sell a pair of boots and get a pair with inserts or have CAST do it, this is like the equivalent of mounting your bindings with glue but not drilling any holes haha, it's going to go badly eventually

Adding tech inserts to boots is a whole lot of bad idea... you are asking to be stranded in the backcountry with broken boots

Can you ski downhill with CAST's converted boots yet?

As far as I know it doesn't do anything to alter the way the boot functions on the downhill. https://casttouring.com/en-us/products/boot-conversion/

I would strongly advise against this. I’d be really worried of the inserts ripping out of the lug. You really want those inserts to be integrated in the construction of the boot. Pretty sure all dedicated touring boots use a pretty large single piece of metal for the inserts which is cast in during the molding process.

yeah dont do that. Just gonna ruin a brand new pair of boots. fork up the money and get a hybrid boot. DIY and Skiing dont mix too well, unless its more boot fit modifications or ski repairs.
