My Daughters First Skis

My daughter is turning 18months old on the 21st of December but this Christmas I wanted to get her on a pair of skis for her first time. I've been shopping online for skis for her size and I don't know if I should buy her plastic skis or not because she is little still. If anyone knows anything about buying ski gear for small children lemme know. Also if you got any advice about having fun teaching little kids or just good memories from being a toddler learning to ski go ahead and share those in this thread too.

Get her something legit my boss started all three of his daughters around that age. I'd recommend getting some 70cm track system skis and don't be afraid to go on bigger on the boots she'll grow quick and she's not going to be charging hard.

Stoked for you man. My Daughter is 22 months and will be skiing for the first time this year. I would check out swap meets and craigslist. Like anything else with toddlers, they are going to grow out of any gear fast enough to warrant not buying new. I would personally stay away from plastic ones as they probably dont have a real edge and wont be good for learning how to control yourself. Also, check out a "Wee Ski" harness, I had one when I was younger and its a good way to keep them from bombing down a hill. Lol, I grew up skiing in the PNW at Alpental and it would rain at any time of the year so we would wear plastic garbage bags.

my local shop has an exchange program where they have a bunch of setups (boots + skis) for kids of various ages so parents can just trade stuff in for new gear every year instead of buying new setups all the time cause kids grow so fast. I'd check to see if your local shop does the same

i learned to ski at 3, (started park at 13) and my fondest memories are
- going up the tbar by myself for the first time (My dad promised me gummi bears)
- finally going on hill instead of the bunny slope
- hitting my first jump (my dad promised me gummi frogs)
- first pow, and my first double black (i was promised gummi sharks)

if she doesnt like it, dont make her, but if she is scared bribe her with gummis, my dad did it, and still does it to this day

^ all of this and make sure to stuff your pockets with candy, you want it to be a good experience for them and a little candy keeps them excited and focused. Last but not least try and end on a positive note that they will remember for next time

Honestly I think it would make more sense just to get season rentals for your kid till they get to a skill level where buying skis makes sense. Buy snowblades for yourself to make messing around teaching them to ski funner for you too.

The snow blades actually help a ton because OP will spend a lot of time trying to teach a toddler to wedge while wedging with a toddler between his legs. Also easy to set around and pick up said toddler.

I concur with those that suggested buying second hand gear.

Also make sure the kids are warm and dry.

alright, dad of the year here, you need to get on a couple local facebook market places for kids gear. You are gonna be buying a lot, then youre gonna end up with a ton of shit they are too big for that you need to sell.

First kids skis and boots used should be like $30, I sold a set 3 days ago. They only make kid's boots so small so they'll probably be too big for an 18 month old but fuck it, crank them down.

Get an edgie wedgie brand tip connector and a harness; Use the handle but never use the leash, you ever see ski school using those things? You probably never noticed, but no, they don't. If your kid can't stop it's too steep. Prepare to spend a lot of time on the magic carpet, it's a very slow learning curve. If you can't get like 30-50 days abandon all hope of them getting good until they are like 6 when they have much better control of their body.
