do coloured bases compared to black bases affect how fast they are?

cheerioExtruded bases can be black however these are the slowest but the easiest to repair and maintain
Race bases are also black (example on this year's Edollos) and are the fastest however the hardest to maintain
Sintered bases are usually clear with graphics behind them, are the middle ground
onenerdykidRE: sintered bases & race bases- all race bases are sintered. There are just different grades of sintered bases and world cup racing uses the fastest versions.
Now even with race bases, not all of them are black. In our slalom skis for example, we use clear/colored bases because the speeds that slalom skiers are going is not fast enough to warrant using a fully black race base. So, we often make clear/colored bases for slalom because they don't need it. With GS, Super-G, and Downhill you will only see all-black race bases because the speeds they are skiing at necessitate it.
Gnar_Shralp406Why is it that race bases are black? Is there a reason the material can't be another color?

nick9955Okay so it does make a difference but only at high speed?
partyandBSWhat about those phantom bases or whatever it’s called. The never wax ones. How do those compare? And how are they on rails? Park durability?? Probs a form on it in here somewhere
Greg_KDPS Phantom 2.0(new version cures faster) is a permanent waxless glide that can be applied to any ski base although you can order DPS skis with it already applied. Unlike wax, it actually empregnates and goes into base so you could get a base grind and it still would glide. Should be good for park use as most park skiers aren’t fussing with hot waxing all the time and Phantom eliminates the need for waxing again.
Reviews seem to be good for it but haven’t tried it myself. It’s $99 per pair of skis to apply so not cheap.
