Gettin pounded on pro deal

Total nightmare scenario is unfolding before my eyes here and its only November, yikes. Put in an order for skis at a brick and mortar shop couple weeks ago with the brand rep there, filled out the paper form signed sealed delivered I'm yours right? Not a chance as I get an email from the shop saying oops, actually theyre all sold out. Find the dealer services number for the manufacturer, he tells me yeah theyre sold out and they dont know when theyll get more. Now I admittedly dont have much knowledge about the manufacturing side of the industry, but this seems off the wall. Like youre telling me the lights are off at the factory, sorry no more skis for the winter? Its only November! This is one of the largest manufacturers in the business, obviously if it were a couple dudes in a garage I would have an easier time believing the shortage.

Love to hear from anybody involved in hardgoods to shed some light on what the hell is going on around here

That's poor business practice. You shouldn't be selling something you don't have. If this was 1850 and the telephone hasn't been invented I could see this happening, but there is no excuse to not be updating inventory status daily or even hourly (if you're a large company). The business should absolutely know how many skis remain unsold in their inventory at any given day so they should know whether or not they should continue selling those skis or not.

Did you pay for them? If so fuck them. They should be named and shamed.

Every ski brand is different, but I'm guessing they're "Sold out" because every pair in their inventory has been shipped or claimed by retail or online buyers. They make a certain amount of skis and that's it, making them all at once is cheaper and easier. They can't just order 10 more pairs and if they did, the margin would be nothing.

Just for clarification, this is definitely an issue with the manufacturer, not the shop. But yea didnt pay yet, had given them my ccd info and was going to be charged on delivery so at least theres that. Just unfortunate to be put in this position and scramble to find some sticks before Im back to work

Its Atomic by the way. Never had this happen with any other company Ive ordered from in the past. For what its worth i know similar things have been happening to folks who ordered the Shift. Placed orders, then told tough shit

As eheath said, companies only produce a fixed amount of product per season that they ship out all at once (I'm assuming because the overhead associated with keeping back stock would drastically lower already low margins). Usually companies will be sold out by mid Nov. - Dec. They keep a limited number of skis for sale on pro form (I'm assuming you work in this shop?), but since they aren't really turning a buck stock is very limited. Usually it's a safe bet to order all of the pro form stuff you want as early as possible, as it runs out very quickly.

It would actually be a lot easier for those two dudes in the garage to keep turning out skis in the winter since they don't deal with large contracts etc. and its all in house... but when you get a company like Salomon, Rossi etc. it makes 0 sense to produce skis through the winter for the sake of back stock when they can just sell a fixed amount and be done with it.

Thank goodness you didn't pre pay at least, it does suck that you missed out on your ski though. Maybe you can get it from a different shop or online? I know that sucks for your local brick and mortar shop but it's your skis after all.

You can most likely buy the product you want. Its just gonna be full price. Its common practice in the industry to set aside a set number of products at the pro deal price.

Pro form shit is available in limited numbers each year and sells out really quick and when you are able to land something it tends to take forever.

I’m in charge of ordering skis for my rental shop in Breck and we have to place our orders at the beginning of the summer. You were late to order. They aren’t going to make a batch of skis just for you. They have a demand for a certain ski and if it’s sold out for the season it’s more than likely sold out. But yes some companies are still pressing their skis currently to get through orders but a company that presses skis in mad quantities overseas has had that shit made and sitting in a warehouse waiting to be shipped by September is already worried and focused on season 19/20. Yes it sucks you missed out on pro-form but that’s part of the game. You have to order your shit as early as you can or else they will have none. You didn’t get pounded. They were out of skis. Simple you can’t just put all the blame on AMER Sports

Yeah, sucks, but it's not really anyone's fault. Proform isn't some magic cure-all. You're trading your place on the totem pole for a deal on gear. When you get that discount you're last in line to get gear. And because you're filling out a paper form it's much harder to anticipate demand for the manufacturer, and they're much more concerned with filling the shop orders and any direct sales they've allready to promised to deliver skis too than making sure some shop rat has his gear before the snow falls. Especially with skis or boots (or bindings) that were just released this season, there's always going to be the danger of them selling out. Sorry!

Someone is going to shit on me for this, but if your an instructor you probably have friends in the industry. Use someone's 3point5.. it'll be cheaper anyway.

nah man was being mad sarcastic, personally try to stay as far away from instructors as possible. I have experticity, prolink, etc but those bigger sites dont have everything

Sorry, how is that toxic?

Pro deal means you are getting a deal on your skis for some reason. It doesn't matter what that reason is, or what your affiliation, or non-affiliation with the ski industry is, you are being given a discount. Now, disregaurding the fact that the first rule of pro deals is "Don't talk about your pro deal." the second rule is "you're the bottom of the totem pole." Amer is not making as much off of your gear, so of course you're not going to get sent skis when they're sold out. That's how running a business works. So say, hypothetically, you ordered a pair of Bentchetler 120s, and Atomic sold all their Bentchetler 120s, Amer isn't going to fire up the presses and make you another pair so you don't whine on the interwebs.

If you're paying full price it's your perogative to be bummed out when a brand sells out of your favorite gear. But, when you are being given a generous hookup it's absolutely irrational to take to the internet to air your butthurt. It's a great way to loose your discount privileges.

Just order a random pair of skis from Atomic then return them to a random shop that has the skis you want for store credit.

Use recently acquired store credit to purchase desired skis.

This will be covered in my self-help book which should be on shelves by spring 2019 for $19.99.

Woof what an unexpected reply. Ive read some of your stuff on Blister and you seem pretty smart, was not expecting that to go so far over your head. I actually liked your first response, was largely rational, I made a joke about you assuming I'm a shop rat. I know it must be tough getting all your stuff through Blister a year in advance so you can write a blog about it though.
