Pre season hiking

So I've done pre season hiking at my home mountain for the past couple years and never had any problems with the mountain except for maybe putting the rails away that we used. This year is the first year I've had a car at school so it's the first time I've tried pre season hiking at the "mountain" we have here but when I got there I was stopped by a guy shoveling the sidewalk and he said that I needed to go to the office to check with them to make sure I could hike so I was like what seems to be the problem I'm just trying to get a couple turns in since a foot of snow fell last night and hes like well you dont have a lift ticket so you cant use our facilities and I was like you want me to pay $50 to hike your hill? So I went to the office to try to talk to someone with more brains in their head but unfortunately I was unlucky. So I asked the lady in the office if I could take maybe two runs down the mountain and she said no because of insurance reasons. If i were to fall then she would be responsible for my injuries and I was like okay I understand that but I'm a decent skier and if I were to fall and break something then I will hobble to my car and take care of it myself and she came back at me with well what if you fell and went unconscious. (I was so close to exploding on her but I'm also trying to get a job at this place so I dont have to pay for an overpriced season pass). So I was like ma'am I dont think a beginner skier would be out here doing preseason laps like I'm not about to go try some new tricks I've never done before I just want to get some turns. So what do you guys think? Was I just lucky to be able to have such a nice mountain before to let me hike or is this chick just not a true skier and doesn't understand the grind?

Bro that is so unlucky.... You just gotta be sneaky as fuck and hike all the way up. Good luck with trying again :)

Yeah you’re honestly better off not asking anyone in that situation and just going up because most mountains are obligated/ have some sort of policy to say it’s a liability to ski during the off-season. As the old saying goes, it’s easier to ask for forgiveness than to ask for permission.

They are right about the insurance though. While you personally would not sue for injury, your insurance provider could go after them and try to get them to pay for it all instead of them.

That’s just HR bullshit.
I literally hiked up my home mountain yesterday and saw about 20 other people either hiking or skinning up. Just make sure you watch out for snowmobiles, grooming cats, and of course other skiers.

I’ve worked as a supervisor before for a resort and there is zero chance of someone saying yes if you ask them. There are a lot of liability issues and no one is gonna put their job on the line to let you hike the hill especially as the hill isn’t going to make any money from it. It doesn’t really matter what you say about not suing or your ability because I’ve been in situations where people sign every single waiver and then they get hurt because of their own stupidity and still sue the resort. And sometimes they still win sadly. But why did you even ask anyone, I would 100% say no if I was asked because you have to cover your own ass but I also wouldn’t be bothered to stop people if I saw it going on.

Damn gotta love corporate America. Sucks your resort doesn't have an uphill travel policy. A lot of mountains allow you to sign a waiver and give you a free ticket to hike the mountain.

I hiked up my local td and it was awesome
my friends and i got a rail set up and everything
no one told us to leave due to insurance or anything else
gotta love free health care

Realistically that lady was just trying to do her job. But I agree, that’s whack. Just the way it goes I guess. Hike up at night and bring a big headlamp.

As a ski hill employee I would do the same as that lady. If I saw someone doing it I wouldn't stop them though. I just did some early laps at the hill I wark at haha. She' is right from the business side of thinks but so apocolyptically wrong from the skiers side. So basically I agree with her but I wouldn't agree with actually not doing it. Just go after office hours or somethng and never ask.

Le relais did that to me a long time ago. I always hiked and biked at the hill. One year, they fenced up everything and prohibited anyone passing the gate. My buddy gave it a try, but got the cops called on him.

my go around was entering the mountain from the backside. The trails were wide enough for a bike, so I would seek in, rip a line and jump on someones property to flee. After scoping the fence, I found a weak spot. The problem was the necessity to pass in front of the lodge; had to do it quick.

It's not corporate America. Some of the tiniest resorts are the most cunty about people hiking.

Also places like Aspen Snowmass that are ultra coorporate have sick uphill policies. You can uphill snowmass, buttermilk, highlands, and ajax for free. They also do full moon parties where you can ski up have some drinks and dinner and ride down.

Some others charge but it's like $20 compared to their $160 lift tickets.

There are smaller places that allow people to hike, but tons that don't.
