Falling off lifts.

Anybody ever fell off or pushed off or something stupid?

Last season I was at copper and while boarding the lift my best friend was knocked over by the chair and slid under. I was then dragged off the chair by my feet which were caught on my friend. He then got knocked unconscious by the next chair because the lift operator wasn't paying attention. Great story, Bad day!

Getting on a 6 person lift with 6 people and some Jerry slides in behind us making 7. My buddy got pushed off the front of the loading ramp by him

Fell on a pomel lift and lost a ski, very embarrassing wouldn't recommend.

I have a re occuring dream about dangling from the chairlift, completely unable to stay on, and then right when my hand starts to slip and I fall to my death, I wake up.

First time ever riding a t-bar. Got to the top, and the bar hooked under my jacket and I was suspended in the air. Lifty then yelled at me to get off, but I was stuck and couldn't do anything. Luckily I came off when he stopped the lift. Thankfully I've overcome my fear of t-bars and have not had any lift mishaps since then

I was this jerry once when I went forward to put me and my gf in addition the the other 4 people on gadzoom(4 person lift)

Nope. Only way this would happen is if the lift went all exorcist like in that country Georgia. I've been close when people fell into me but even when all 3 other people fell, I did not.

When i was younger my mom got off with a snow plow i jumped off late, it was a fixed chair and it came around and knocked the heck outta me.

One time at timberline I was being stupid and got my tips stuck in the snow while the chair was leaving the bottom and my ski popped off. That's about it.

When I was working park @ my local hill in Michigan a young girl fell from a good 25+ feet onto FIRM Midwest hardback. She survived & was rushed to the hospital via ambulance. Crazy what the human body can endure even at a very young age.

I believe (apart from kids being kids & likely not paying enough attention) it was partially chalked up to the seats being slick from recent snowmaking.

Seriously though, how hard is it for people to just sit still? The seats are literally tilted back. Glad she was ok though.

Similar story, right down to working park haha. Kid slid off at about 30 feet with nothing but ontario thunder pow aka ice underneath. It happened to be on ladies day and we had a "bouncer" big muscly dude for the event. He saw the kid hanging before falling and ran out. He actually caught them and the kid was fine, bouncers only complaint to patrol was a sore big toe haha. Superheroe in the flesh stuff. I saw it and it was epic.

Pay attention = don't get fucked up. Not that hard. Sure, jerry can take you out on the unload but if you're getting run over by chairs loading you're doing something wrong.

Also falling off the lift is a bad idea. Plenty of NSers talk about how cool they are and how the bar isn't necessary. There's probably a ski lift fall death every season, or close to it somewhere. Plenty of injuries. Don't get me wrong I ride bar up plenty of times, we used to have to riding with tools, but the people who complain about the bar being down. If you're 12 and it's dropping your cool points I get it, but otherwise if somebody wants it down it isn't a big deal. As long as people don't slam you in the head for that, but also should generally expect bar to come down and be prepared.

People underestimate how high they are and what that impact does to your body on firm snow. Absolutely nothing good.

Totally get this like if someone wants it down I'm not gonna complain but realistically on most older lifts how much is the bar actually gonna do if u slip off?

If the lift abruptly stops or a strong gust of wind hits you in the back and you fly forward, the bar will be something to stop you falling off. It's pretty difficult to "slide" under and off unless you're slouching or a child; in which case, the bar is still something you can grab onto to not die. When you're 40-100ft off the ground, unless there's 10ft of pow, those are fatal heights....especially for all your rockstars who don't wear helmets.

Guess that's why most ppl falling off seem to be kids tbh tho as long as ur paying attention to conditions, lift speed etc ur fine

I've had a bar unbolt an nearly detach. It snagged on something and didn't completely fall. Woulda sucked if I was fully relying in it.

But the bar does help a decent amount. People can and still have slipped under. People have gotten hung upside down from the bar but at the same time it's generally a good thing as far as safety.

Funny story... Last year at DV I was skiing groomers by myself and I came down Sidewinder, skiing fast but making nice, big turns. There was ONE other guy on the whole run, who was stopped in the middle. I skied past on the side, thought absolutely nothing of it. I get to the bottom and I'm loading the chair solo, and the guy skis up next to me to get on the chair. No big deal. Once the chair leaves the station, he immediately put me in a headlock and yelled, if you ski that close to me again I will fucking kill you. I wrestled out of the headlock and jumped off the chair. I happened to land 2 feet from a ski patrol dude fixing the pad on the tower. After telling my story we rode up and met the guy, who the lifty had held at the top. After some yelling between us all, DV Ski patrol pulled his pass for good!

Cant beat the deer valley difference!

At the poma/t-bar thing at the bowl at breck, it was my first time using a lift like that (not that many in the east) and i accidentally grabbed it before it was my turn to take one and ride up. I let go and the thing went whipping forward luckily didn't hit anyone or anything but i definitely lost about 50 core points for pulling that shit in front of the locals

last year at bear my buddy and i were on the loading line waiting for our chair to swing around and then 3 snowboarders slide up, its a 4 man chair. i looked at the operator and said i think you need to stop the chair, he looked at me through his drug haze and only stopped the chair after it made it to the line, i had to jump to the side to avoid getting worked.

operator didn't even say sorry. i wrote a complaint on his dumb ass. too stupid to load a chair.

Never had problem falling off

Do have a problem with having the chair hitting me behind the legs when I’m loading - to combat this I basically load very last minute and make sure someone else gets the majority of chair behind the leg impact

If you're getting walloped by the chair, you're likely loading in the wrong spot from my experience. Usually too far back. When resorts have the load line fucked up and the chair smacks me, all I do is move up a foot and it's fine. Also if lifties are good about grabbing the chair, this is a non issue.

If anyone goes to whistlers peak chair with out the bar and look down with out holding on I give you money. So scary like 150 plus feet. def scarier in person.

Last year at Bachelor a young kid didn’t get on the lift and his dad was holding on to him but decided not to yell and stop the lift so me and my friends had to and by the time it stopped they were a solid 50 feet in the air and everyone comes out to catch him and then the dad just pulls him up and we all just go on with our day. Pretty scary but it’s nice to have good lift operators who run a long distance up the hill to possibly catch a kid.

My brothers ski carry loop on his backpack got stuck on the bar you rest your skis on and the lift dragged him with it until he was hanging 25ft up. They ended up reversing the lift to get him unstuck.

Idk, I just always push off slightly. My ass hits the seat before my legs get bumped. On some of those old school lifts in steep terrain that run fast as fuck I'll get bumped occasionally. But even then there's usually lifties bumping chairs on those

Other technique is ride in late and let it whisk you away while your momentum is going forward

When i was a kid i had a habit of leaning on the bar and looking down. But one time i was going up the lift with my parents and we hadn't gotten the bar down yet, (We were probably only 1 or 2 towers up the lift at this point) and my first grade ass leans forward to look over the edge of the lift and i start to slip. I can remember hearing my dad go "Martha hold my poles!" and he grabbed me by the hood of my jacket. I imagined it felt like being held like a lion cub in its mothers mouth, maybe not. Anyway thats my story
