HodorIt might just be the crop of films I've seen in the past couple years, but it seems like the level of big mountain/bc skiing has declined in the past 5 or so years or maybe even earlier. Of course Candide has pulled some mind blowing lines but it seems like athletes are just not pushing as hard as they used to. I understand pros like Sean Pettit wanting to scale back from the stress and focus on fun/style, but selfishly, its just so epic to see athletes push the limits of what's rideable. Maybe its because the non-park area of skiing has become increasingly more about ski mountaineering/touring and movie segments have followed suit? Anyways, urban/park has only gotten more fun to watch over the years but I just want to have my mind blown by some gnarly big mountain skiing once again and lately many segments have been kind of lack luster. Maybe I am just watching the wrong shit. Have you all seen any standout big mountain segments lately?
GMBI definitely agree and I have been thinking the same thing lately. TGR movies especially have been declining in their big mountain quality. I was just watching Under The Influence the other day and Sage/Seth were sending it so much harder than the Angel/Johnny Collinson's of today. Hell, even Seth, Kent Kreitler, and Dean Cummings were sending it 10x harder and going so much bigger back around 2000 than people are today. Sean Pettit was going huge a couple years back for a good while as well. Remember Abma sending rodeo 9's off of huge cliffs? Or Chris Collins sending double backflips off cliffs mid gnarly lines? I could go on forever with the comparisons but yes, I completely agree. Outside of T-Hall and Candide, there hasn't been a whole lot of big progression in recent years when it comes to big mountain.
Nickc88Sammy Carlson's edit from last year was pretty sick. OP should probably check that out on NS.

karlmarxits not about sending a trick off a massive air with a mandatory backslap/hot-tub landing anymore. seth morrison took that as far as it could go, and big mountain skiing has been moving towards more fluid yet technical stuff. watch numinous and tell me thats not more impressive than what was happening 5 years ago. maybe the stunts aren't as crazy, but the skiing is better, if that makes sense
Twinjibber77Unfortunately, I haven't seen enough movies in the recent years to comment on that... but what I will say is that I can 100% see the appeal now (in my late 20's) to mountaineering/touring. I think it's really cool and definitely a sweet niche moving into films. I'm not a mountaineer by any stretch, but I love seeing the treks some of these dudes make and even the sled gang guys out west riding into the BC to build their own shit. The change of setting is welcomed by me.
WillgumI haven't seen many recent ski films, when you say mountaineering / trekking, do you mean movies actually document the journey they make? Or it just features the gnarly lines that the skiiers needed to trek to?
I love when ski films to mix in storylines that capture the journey and the element of the mountains, if that's becoming a trend I'm all for it.

yuhyuhI mean they put a 10 year old in their movie.
QuaffTGR and that douche Todd Jones are just riding their success from a decade ago. I could put together a better crew of big mountain skiers just from friends and Jackson locals I've skied with a time or two.

SofaKingSickI hear what you're saying, OP, but like this^ dude and others have said, it's more about what's "in" nowadays than the level going down
Seth et al pretty much found the limits of massive cliff hucks, whereas nowadays it's more in vogue to stomp cliffs cleanly and incorporate them into lines. rest assured huge cliffs are still being sent, but it's just not as prevalent as it was when landing on your back was just as much a bagged shot as a smaller stomp was
But it sounds like you need some Richard Permin in your life, dude slams massive cliffs and lines. Check his insta at least
yuhyuhI mean they put a 10 year old in their movie.
GMBYES to Permin and Sammy. Forgot to mention those dudes.
And YES to TGR riding their fame from a decade ago. Also, pretty obnoxious how a 10 year old (one of the filmmaker's sons) has a full segment in one of their movies. I get that he's good, but come on now. The crowd at every TGR premiere in recent years has been let down.
Rum_HamDid you see Numinous? That had some pretty gnarly lines in it.
Maybe you've just been desensitized by all the years of crazy shit you've seen.
HodorLooks like i need to check out Numinous. Somehow flew under my radar when it came out.

jps2.0has anyone ever skied a legit big mountain line completely switch?
BigPurpleSkiSuitI think it was rudygarmisch who said something about charley ager being the most progressive around 5-6 years ago and no one has come close to what he was doing back then. I'd tend to agree that I don't see other people stomping giant 540s off cliffs and shit these days like he did

cydwhitI mean, have you seen the segment? It's pretty legit, and stands up well to some of the TGR segments from 10 years ago. Also, imagine if Kai was a free agent, and his dad wasn't Todd. I think any kid who put out that segment would be recruited by a major company, regaurdless of parrenting. I'm no TGR apologist, but their movies are consistently pretty awesome, and anyone hating on the Collinsons really confuses me.
To the OP. I understand what you're saying, but my response would be that segments have gotten less huck-y and more technical. There's less backslapping and hot tubbing and more stomping. As mentioned in this thread, Sammy C has done some really cool stuff, the Numinous segments I've seen so far are insane, the Big Picture guys have been pushing things in interesting directions, the Chasing Nirvana guys have some great segments.
I would also argue that that marketplace is more saturated than ever before. You're seeing more mediocre big mountain skiing because it's easier to create content than it's ever been, so more mediocre skiers are making edits. The days of the MSP movie and the TGR movie having the best big mountain skiing you'll see all year are gone. Now the tallent is all spread out among different projects.
yuhyuhdidn't pollard do something like this?
freestyler540Pep Fujas in session 1242
K-Dot.idk Karl Fosvedt's latest movie is has some pretty innovative skiing if you ask me
