Freeskier turned Rapper, Jon McMurray, died on Sunday after an airplane stunt for a music video went tragically wrong. McMurray was one of the early pioneers of flips on rails and was one of the standout talents of the early days. He filmed with MSP, Poorboyz, Level 1 and others. McMurray went on to be found Loose Canon Players and moved into the music industry after a series of major injuries. He leaves behind his wife, parents, and brother.

Damn that sucks, especially since skydiving is pretty damn safe. Same thing happened to Roner. RIP. I hope his wife is doing ok, she has a comment on Jon's last post saying "I can't live without out. See you soon"

Wasn't Roner in a wing suit? Either way the number of ex pros who passed skydiving/base jumping is kind of gnarly. Such a sad situation all around

I'm 95% sure it was just sky diving for Roner, which is just incredibly sad. Skydiving is way, way, way less risky then basejumping.

Will always remember this segment. Jon isn't the skier, but he started rapping and made the song for Josh Stacks segment in The Grand Bizarre. Couldn't find the whole segment online, but this was the first ski movie I ever bought, and will forever be a part of my childhood. Absolutely gutted to hear he has passed, but considering his lifestyle of hucking gnarly shit, he lived a good life doing what he loved. SIP!

Couldn't find the whole segment online, but this was the first ski movie I ever bought, and will forever be a part of my childhood. Really? Oh shit man.
I will always remember him in ski movie 3 the front line; landing a backflip to rail, underflipping the humped rail at Whistler and his backflips off of house roofs with a broken arm. He will be dearly missed.

Holy fuck this hits me hard.

Jon was one of the OG Bow Valley shredders, with bushy and the rest of the LCP boys. Huge legend that got heckled out of the scene for his rap antics.

The dude stayed on my couch no more than 2 months ago. I still have a memory card he left here with some video on it. I mean, I knew it was only a matter of time but I still can't believe this is real.

Ah what a bummer. I really liked Jon. He seemed really sincere to me and I enjoyed the way he carried himself. He was an easy person to judge from a facade but the more I got to know him he shed light onto the fact that judgements are baseless and undeserved. Glad I got to know him.

At the same time I think there’s value in this topic and the outcome of circumstances that now leaves him dead. I’ll refrain on assuming because I don’t know the details of his incident. What I can say is I met up with Jon and a bunch of his friends a few years ago at a famous beginner BASE jumping location. Although there was one experienced jumper in the group, Jon was certainly taking the fast and ill-prepared track to jump. With very minimal skydive experience, (and a crashed landing due to inexperience which resulted in broken gear he had to pay for) he then went up to this spot to learn to BASE jump. Our mutual friend and him asked me to help him out with his base stunt of jumping off a truck over a bridge and deploying a parachute for his music video. I told him it was a pretty dumb idea and wouldn’t offer my parachute for him to use but was willing to offer advice in any way I could. We hung around my friends and I did a few jumps and he ended up getting a parachute and going though with the stunt. He ended up doing it, and nailing it like a boss. But the bigger part in all of this is that moment represents so much of what is happening in all extreme/action/adventure sports. The information and content is out there more and more each year. The pace at which people progress is faster than ever, but it isn’t coupled with a depth of experience and humility that needs to happen in order to truly understand yourself and abilities, not that anyone will ever perfectly know themselves, but most people improve the knowledge of self over time. Time is the variable missing in all of this and it is something I sit back and have seen kill so many of my friends involved in high risk activities. The value of time in the equation of skill and experience has been written in blood over and over again. There’s a benefit to being exposed to something for a long and meaningful period of time.

The irony is that I’ve made the mistakes I’m preaching against and here I am being hypocritical albeit sincere in the words that even if they only are heard by one person that truly listens, will make it all worth it.

Oh man, rough. The year I filmed LCP at the London Freeze and hung out with with them was hilarious, such a wild guy. First time on skis in like 3/4 years and he flat 3s the jump first hit on borrowed equipment.

He was doing a charity event at a golf course. While he was parachuting in, he hit a tree. It was a freak accident. This is just sad all around.

Oh man what a bummer. Those MSP segments made a really big impression on me. The one that started with him jumping off the overpass onto the bus and then doing a standing backflip made him instantly likable. That dude was really great at getting upside down.

Sad to hear. Jon was sure a character.

This is really unfortunate. His seg in Focused was one of the things that got me back into skiing from my snowboarding days. Just so balls to the wall trying outlandish things that looked really fun.

Not to sidetrack, but speaking of Focused - the number of skiers in that film that are no longer with us is borderline tragic.

I disagree. Focused was a movie with a lot of the dudes who were getting into parachute stuff (as I recall, there was a lot of parachute footage in the movie itself compared to most), so it makes sense that that roster would be, idk... in extra danger.

Put another, simpler, safer way: I'll gladly bet you big money that no movie this year will lose 5+ of its riders to deaths directly caused by action sports. Skiers die a lot compared to a lot of sports but this list^ is so tragic in part because of the parachute etc stuff and because people were kinda pushing it on the whole more than now. Nowadays people are doing crazy shit but a solid half of it is relatively low consequence stuff when you compare it to ski-BASEing etc and the kind of crazy big cliffs and jumps that were THE hot shit at the time

I just watched parts of Happy Dayz on Youtube and the same thing hit me, especially seeing CR. I ran into him at CU Boulder when he first got signed to 4Frnt and he was probably the most laid back and down to earth guy I ever met. You could tell he was so stoked to be back on it and was just getting his CRJ pro model dialed in. I have a signed poster from him in my closet and his CRJ skis and it still gets me every time I look at it.
