If you are big on nightlife then I would live close to downtown or maybe in PC. The nightlife isn't that great in SLC, I can't speak to PC. If you don't have a car then try to live close to trax or at least a bus route which is easy. When I was living there a couple years ago I was paying 240 a month to share a house with 4 other guys right under the U. I wouldn't expect to find something that cheap, but something around 500 with a couple roommates should be easy enough. Maybe look towards the bottom of big cottonwood for skiing but that will take you away from downtown. I would imagine PC is going to be a little more pricey but when slc is in a nasty inversion for a couple weeks that is the place to be.
As far as where to ski, I'm sure there are plenty of threads on that topic. I did 4 years at Snowbird and loved it. Looking back, I kinda wish I would have done one year somewhere else. It's hard to go wrong though.

I'm back in Idaho now, but I'll be down a few times this winter

Live in/near Sugar House. If you live with other people it's easy to pay like 400$ a month and live in a big ass house. Alta has the best terrain, Snowbird has the longest season, Brighton is the best all-around mountain and is super playful. Only go to PC if you want to lap park all day.

If nightlife (going to bars etc.) is super important you probably should just stay away from Utah.

Mormons are all complete cowards based on my experience.

One of the high schools I went to years ago was Mountain View High School in Mesa, AZ

Long story short... Girl that had been flirting with me called my mother a whore and I go forehead to forehead with her telling her if she says one more thing about my mother, I pay the nastiest bitch I can find from south mountain high school to shut her mouth.

Next thing I know, a buddy of mine who was an office aid pulls me out of class to tell me a bunch of mormons are going to kick my ass next break in the smoking area (AZ used to let kids over 10th grade smoke in a designated area with a permission slip).

So I go out there, there's easily over 100 mormon kids all doing the "hold me back! hold me back!" business.

Now I'm originally from Long Beach. So I fully expected to be stabbed, shot, beaten down. Whatever. But I wasn't going to back down. So I went out there.

Not ONE of them laid a finger on me. At one point I kind of snapped trying to process what was happening. I couldn't quite make sense of why everyone was screaming how dead I was, yet nobody, including the varsity football players that showed up. Was laying a finger on me.

So I dropped to my knees, and screamed "What do I have to do to get you pussies to fight me?". Then I closed my eyes, raised my arms at my sides screaming "Come kick my ass!".

Again, it was complete pandemonium. Well over 100 kids after me. But not one of them, actually laid a finger on me.

Best footnote. You should have seen the look on the big football player kid's face that was making the most noise when he walked into the kempo studio I was helping teach kickboxing at about a month later after school.

It was like he saw a ghost, kid left midway through the class.

My point? Confront the fuck out of mormons. They won't do shit. They're ALL TALK.

It only takes like 45 minutes from downtown.. Sure on a powder day its a different story, but thats anywhere.

Use the classifieds on ksl.com to look for housing. Utah is weird, we dont really use craigslist that much here.
