Is participating in a FWQ event realistic?

I am curious if it is really possible to jump in 2* events in the FWQ without any competition history? How many people register and how many are invited already for each 2* event? I get how you have to register right away when the window opens but how many people come off of the waitlist and how many people apply for each event? For example, I want to do the Crested Butte, Grand Targhee, Taos, Big Sky and Kirkwood (I live around there)? If it is difficult, are there any recommendations how I can jump on one of these competitions?

its easy, i used to do the kirkwood event just for the chance to ski the cirque
sign up, show up, and ski!
