Prob somewhere it's dark 20+ hours a day and -30 degrees all the time. Not to say the guys from the Mid-west aren't passionate. Hardest ski scene in the continental U.S. for sure.
Purest form of skiing is for sure AT. Combines both the original purpose (moving places across snow) and the current reason it’s popular (riding down slopes).
As far as downhill skiing I would say big mountain. Riding natural terrain that shouldn’t be feasible is amazing.
As far as dedication I would definitely give you Midwest. Nothing is more dedicated than riding flat, icy slopes in -30 degree weather
