dan4060It depends on what you consider a big city. You have to define that first. I would say Seattle.
People have mentioned LA. I live in Newport Beach, a bit south of LA, and I ski Mammoth 2-3 weekends a month, 35 to 40 days a year. That requires a TON of driving and getting a ski lease, which will probably run 300-500 a month. If you can afford that and you are willing to drive socal is great, but it is not easy to be a skier here the way it is in Seattle. Big Bear does suck if you don't ski park much, but Mammoth is one of the best mountains anywhere. Mt. Baldy actually has fun terrain, but it gets very little snow and does not always open.
DesertStixWtf do you do for a living?
dan4060Statistician. My wife makes good money too. I'm also older than most here and I don't have kids. That helps things. You guys will find as you get older that kids are very expensive. I know lots of people who used to do the ski lease thing who have stopped because they had kids, it is hard to do both.
DesertStixMan tell me about it. I’m at the age where all my friends are having kids and I’m just watching their savings accounts get liquidated paying for child care. Best friend just got his wife pregnant and they had to cancel a European vacation in a couple months because of the financial curveball.
My friends that ski with kids only have half the day now. When the youngins are at ski school they get to shred on their own but it’s family time on the easy groomers after lunch :/
CLQMore to life then just skiing my man
hstedmanReno - I would personally vouch for Reno because I lived there the last couple of summers for work.
There's like 10 big ski areas within 90 minutes and 3 hours flat to Mammoth which has a way longer season than anything in SLC and pretty much any mountain that isn't Timberline. Some of those mountains are small but some are as good as anything you find in Utah. Plus, there's more to do non-skiing here than in SLC. Once the snow melts you have Tahoe in your backyard to boat, hike, MTB or do whatever all summer.
A lot of young people are moving there because the job market is blowing up. The bar scene can be pretty fun and you don't have to deal with the 3.2 beer and general annoying aspects of living in a town controlled by Mormons.
There are only a couple downsides. The first is that Reno has a bit of a bad rep because it had been in a big slump and some of the locals are alcoholics/have drug problems. But once you live there you quickly get over it and when people come to visit they will understand. The other is that the airport Reno/Tahoe has super expensive flights and they aren't direct to big cities further away. Finally, and this is more of an issue recently, is that the Tahoe snow can be iffy. Some seasons (like 2011 or 2016/2017) it is pretty much the snowiest place in the world. Other seasons it's sunny and 50 degrees the whole time and January seems like April. Still, you can have a lot of fun with it. Lastly, it's just large enough to be a city (200-400 thousand) but there's rarely any traffic.
I'd certainly check it out - seen some other good suggestions on here too though
OregonDeadDing ding ding.
OP didn't say it has to be North America. Skiing opportunities seem way more interesting than Salt Lake.
Lots of good wine in the markets. You're not gonna miss Trader Joe's in Switzerland.

AbiHDude are you from The Lone Star State????
DesertStixAnd a chance you’ll respond with Lt. Dangle on scene.
Serious question, besides gambling and the immediate skiing nearby, what do people go to Reno for?
