Europe belongs to the Europeans

Do you disagree? Think about it in terms of America. Mexicans cross the border all the time seeking a better life because there country is so corrupt. I would rather see them take back their country than continue to seek refuge in America. And I know they would to. Would you want to leave your homeland and seek refuge in some foreign country because you were scared of persecution? Probably not.

If your neighbors house burns down, would you rather they come live with you or would you rather see them build a new house?

Maybe not immediately, I'm sure it sounds real valiant to take back your home country. But when you get to a country that has plenty of government handouts and isn't run by drug lords and with houses that aren't in danger of being hit with an artillery shell, you start to think gee, why would I potentially throw my life away for something that may or may not work when I can enjoy my new life here.

The problem I have is that saying "Europe belongs to the Europeans" kinda sounds like nationalistic bullshit to me. But I do feel like taking in refugees is always a short term solution. Lots of people, typically the people who aren't middle/upper class and don't have the money and means to leave the country will always be left behind. you can't evacuate everyone. Would probably better to fix whatever issue is causing everyone to try and flee the country. But that's easier said than done i guess.

The gist of what I'm understanding from this statement is not that Europe should reject immigrants, but that people who have sought refuge in Europe and eventually gain the means to do so should do what they can to make their country of origin better.
By the logic that "Europe belongs to the Europeans" taken by itself, everyone of European descent in North America or anywhere else should go back to Europe.

Considering America was first settled by refugees fleeing religious persecution, this comment is highly ironic. Also when the persecution punishment or collateral causalty risk is death, would you really not flee? Bitch please.

As for Europe and the refugees, I understand the statement that Europe belongs to Europeans and agree that those countries need to fix their shit. The Middle East is some kind of crazy these days, however it's been like that for milleniums.

On the other hand, the europe/Europeans statement is kind of insane because most of the people who could have done something to change their country are there either causing trouble or fighting against it. 21.8% of syrian refugees are males 18-59, which in 4mil refugees is about 870,000 adult males. Considering sryia has a population of 18.43mil, that's not a huge percentage. The rest are either women of all ages or children less than 18 years old. 38.5% of refugees are less than 12 years old (1.54mil!!!).

What were you doing in 6th grade? Probably not expected to rebuild a country or fight off terrorist groups that elite militaries are struggling against.

I understand the security concerns and they are valid.

Using the argument about America being settled is way different. It was not an established country with defined borders nor did it have a ruling government. It was "mostly" unoccupied land except for the natives. Theoretically, settlers could have came here and had virtually no contact with the natives (we obviously know that went a different route)

Your trying to compare that to a modern country that incase you havent heard is facing a multitude of issues involving overpopulation. Apples and Oranges

Also, most refugees are illiterate or poorly educated. how do you expect them to get jobs and support themselves? Not that they cant learn to read and write, but how long does that take? Assuming they want to learn.

As for your comment about me not grasping the horrors, I do. Im not saying they shouldnt be helped, because I think they should. However this help is mostly going to be in the form of federal aid from the government. All im saying is that I would rather see that money being spent on a long term solution like fixing the country they came from. Continuing to accept refugees is not a long term solution. How the issue is resolved or what time frame is beyond me, Im not here to discuss logistics. Im just here to try and understand why OP has an issue with what the Dalai Lama said in regards to refugees returning home.
