The ski industry needs more of this and SocialMediaSkier got it right by satirizing the over the top smug and overly virtuous content of Caroline's social media accounts. Perhaps if she didn't take herself and activism with the utmost piety she could develop the humility to have a laugh at witty satire at her own expense like a normal human being.

I think it's funny and good because it raises awareness of how deeply dependent we are on non renewable resources. I'm not gonna act like I wouldn't fly around the world to go skiing if I had the chance, though.

I appreciate her response but if she's gonna show up to public hearings to speak up for the environment and then very publicly consume a ton of fossil fuels for the ultimate sake of entertainment then she and other climate aware professional skiers will never be taken seriously. This a major issue in the climate change community. Many of the people who get the most recognition for their efforts to fight climate change are celebrities who use far more fossil fuels than even your average climate skeptic. No one cares about the people truly living the fight because their lives are probably super boring tbh

These are good points and you are definitely right about real climate change deniers using the airplane argument as a gotcha. My only disagreement with this comparison is, those climate change deniers:
1. Think its a valid argument against climate change
2. Not joking

95% of active posters on this site in the year 2004 under the age of 16 were cyber bullied by green names and true pioneers of this sport and it made us cooler and tougher in the long run. NS was so much better back then

I can’t imagine the fuel needed to power the chairlifts on a mountain. Wouldn’t be so bad if lifts were counterbalanced but think of how most lifts only bring people up. That’s a lot of torque. And how many western mtns have like 50 lifts.. i imagine that is the equivalent to multiple drilling rigs..
People travel to ski, the financial gain from locals is minimal. Also let’s not forget the hi fluoro wax from our skis goes straight to the water supply. Sure we want snow but can’t be blaming other people for our problems

No one's gonna stop driving cars. The way to fix climate change is to find alternative energy sources. It might not make a huge difference while we're alive but it'll save the world 3 gens down the line. Nuclear and solar seem most promising.

I'll throw my perspective into this, I'm a bit late to the conversation but the way I see it hypocrisy does present itself when individuals/"public figures" make it their personal mission to save the environment.
People like DiCaprio and Caroline Gliech harm the environment just like everyone else, in fact they hurt the environment more than the average individual and this is a fact. The difference I find interesting is that Caroline Gliech is actively attempting to "save the earth" and "make change" by bitching at others on the Internet. It is a given that DiCaprio and other public figures who endorse a similar ideology bitch in a similar way however I will argue that Leonardo DiCaprio has in fact actively participated in environmental change unlike Caroline Gliech with her methodical social media cries. Even though DiCaprio might come off as an idiot under multiple circumstances, like when he thought a Chinook during the filming his academy award winning film "the revenant" was an effect of climate change...but you can't deny the fact that he has put forward millions of dollars in favor of change, made a documentary, sparked much conversation regarding climate change, etc...
But the reality is this, no amount of bitching from individual public figures will spark any real change. Truth be told, the only way humanity will truly combat climate change is on a global scale, through agreements between entire Nations and their governments. But given that the majority of the world's nations are more lenient toward capital gain and corporate greed as opposed to slowing down the climate change of our planet, I don't believe we'll ever see any actual change. Just individuals bitching on the Internet and maybe straws being banned.

To make up for it I'm going to:
- Make 1 cent donation for every mile I travel in the van. I'm also going to add up last years van travel and donate that. Midterms are coming up soon.
- Donate that money to Democratic candidates in swing states, and those who are in close races with Republicans.
- Ask my sponsors to match me.
- Ask fellow van travelers to do the same.
- Not eat meat during TAFT.

Big ups for actually doing something. Everyone who loves and cares about the outdoors lives a hypocritical lifestyle, the best we can do is offset that on a personal and on a political level. The one thing you kinda touched on is voting. Your friends and you voting can be the single biggest (positive) impact you can have on the environment.

I can guarantee her "environmental activism" is producing a larger carbon footprint than most Americans.

CLQOops I didn't mean it that way. I mean't in a, you're actually doing something good for the environment because Caroline Gleich is a slacktivist. So in a way, she did actually get people to help the environment, just probably not in the way she intended.

To make up for it I'm going to:

this is great! glad to see something positive come out of this dumb thread. i already donate as i can, eat 80% less meat than i used to, volunteer, etc so at this point in my life im doing all i reasonably can on my modest research salary so i have nothing new to add to the table right now but rest assured we are on the same team here. good stuff man
