Ski satire at it's finest. (also what happened to the female skier emoji movement?)

SofaKingSickAlso, shout out to the ski community for incessantly complaining about the lack of girl shredders, yet simultaneously picking on almost every single girl skier that dares post something on the internet
SteveSteppI dont think thats entirely fair to say. SocialMediaSkiers original post had nothing to do with her being a female skier and it wasnt making fun of her skiing at all. It was satirizing the irony of someone who supposedly fights the ills of climate change while simultaneously contributing to it. I think the post could be applied to anyone at her level or following, regardless of gender. Obviously as skiers we are all guilty of the same hypocrisy at varying levels, so the underlying joke wasn't necessarily targeting her and her 'activism' ....There are plenty of other people who post the same kinds of things.
I think if she had a little more self awareness about the joke and irony that, for the sake of our sport, we are all trying to fight climate change together, her reaction would have been better received.

SofaKingSickYeah fair enough and you make good points. Idk if this is the best example of what I said, but like you said, she ain't the only person on insta that makes posts like this and I think people are really quick to pile on cause it's easy and safe.
Idk, I just don't think this shit is too clever and I think the dude's energy could be better spent doing literally anything else if he's so concerned about the net utility of Caroline's effects on climate change...yawn
SteveSteppYea yea i mean im not trying to change your mind or anything, but i do wonder: When you say he could spend his energy doing literally anything else, what could that possibly be? If he can't make a joke about Carloline Gleich, who can he joke about. Why is she exempt?
I'm of the opinion that anything and everything is open to commentary and humor. Shes a public figure that puts herself and her ideas on the internet, thats an open invitation to criticism, even its in the crosshairs of a joke.
If SMS made a post about Todd Jones billing his TGR athletes for helicopter time and someone spoke up saying "its his company he can run it however he likes, you shouldnt make fun of him" would you side with that person? Meaning, would you give that person a pass and agree that "TGR and todd Jones are off limits" for jokes?
Obviously climate change is a sensitive issue that we all care about here on NS, but i dont think it should be exempt.
Just one mans opinion. But i agree that targeting someone who is speaking up for climate change seems taboo, but i was mostly surprised that she wasnt able to see the irony.
SofaKingSicknaw im not looking for any rules about who or what you can joke about. i just think some discretion could be used. like i said, i roll my eyes at caroline's posts for sure sometimes, but the hive mind sure loves piling on in cases like this. hey, that girl who talks about climate change TOOK A PLANE TRIP guys, get her! is that the extent of the "gotcha" moment? it's really not that ironic unless you don't have any grasp at all on what the biggest factors are in climate change
ive been having to be around climate change deniers here and there lately (and i struggle to come to terms with the EPA chief being a climate change "skeptic") so you'll pardon me if i dont think it's too clever for our tiny little community to be cutting each other down for daring to talk about climate change while also doing normal skier shit. we skiers have work to do but acting like someone who flies is disqualified to post about it is sinking the conversation to the level the real enemy here does. it's literally the same nonsense people threw at al gore, "oh my god he's such a hypocrite, he takes planes to travel to talk about climate change! check mate, stupid science bitches!"
as for the gender thing, i don't follow SMS so i can't say what else he goes after and i said in another post that i was prob wrong to even bring gender into this. to my eyes, singling out caroline just seems arbitrary when instagram is filled to the brim with stupid pretentious nonsense.
here's what i guess is caroline's response to this stuff. i think it's a pretty decent response. i also personally think it's pretty cowardly to make these jokes and then go "oh my god it was just a joke" because the claim of the joke was very clear and it's really not the responsibility of the butt of the joke to play along and let the joke land
"...This year, I’ll fly much more than the average American. Does that mean I should give up? Go live in a hole? No, it means I’ll do more. Personal responsibility is important and so is large scale change, from business and government. That’s why I show up and speak up at as many public hearings as I can, putting pressure on our city and state and nation to go renewable and reduce consumption. It’s why I work with brands like @patagonia who are doing everything they can to make clothing last longer, more reparable and out of recycled materials. I don’t let the guilt of imperfection get in the way of taking action, and neither should you."
SteveSteppThese are good points and you are definitely right about real climate change deniers using the airplane argument as a gotcha. My only disagreement with this comparison is, those climate change deniers:
1. Think its a valid argument against climate change
2. Not joking
In SMS case, the difference is clear, hes a parody/satire account. Hes not trying to disprove climate change with that argument, hes using to poke fun at Caroline. Whether or not its a valid argument is irrelevant because its a perfect example of satire and i can guarantee hes perfectly aware that climate change is real.
Either way, agree to disagree. I think the only reason it got to this level is because of those articles that came out last year about her being cyber bullied.

Saga. The account is amusing at times. But anyone can pick low hanging fruit.
ParryWithAnAHypocrisy needs to be called out. Especially when it comes from people like her. Cries about global warming = Takes an airplane... Bitches about female ski emojis = Does nothing to help women who actually need it....
SofaKingSicksurprisingly scathing words from a guy who roams the country in a diesel van to ride chairlifts and advertise for a ski company that ships from china
...see how easy and lazy it is to dismiss someone with a reductive description? i'm not even a fan of caroline gleich but this is pathetic ankle biting

@LANTASKII've never seen Andy Parry attempt to sanctimoniously tow the POW Climate Change Alarmist line ...that's the difference.
ParryWithAnAThis is true.
I try my hardest to not be a hypocrite, or ignorant of my carbon footprint. I know that I'm (skiing) is part of the problem and accept that. What makes me uneasy is social media "activists" that are totally ignorant of what they are doing. They think they can make a post to bring awareness to climate change while being one of the biggest offenders.

skiermanIts like Leonardo DiCaprio complaining about climate change while he cruises the world on his private 300ft. yacht and Gulfstream.
This is why humanity is fucked.
SofaKingSickim an idiot for even replying to a skierman post
gapersarefriendsWhat else would margetts do while he's shitting? (Isn't it margetts?)
skiermanYeah, you're almost as big of an idiot as Caroline Gleich. At least responding to my post isn't harming the environment while making yourself look like a complete hypocrite jackass.
SofaKingSickOkay, so in your world it's better to do nothing (except talk shit on the internet) than to speak about climate change even if one's still a part of the problem (like everyone else)?
according to her site, caroline does work with "Protect Our Winters, HEAL Utah, Winter Wildlands Alliance, Wilderness Society, Tree Utah and Adventurers and Scientists for Conservation." but hey, that's valueless because she flies in planes right?
if she's a "slacktivist," what does that make you as you drive around 4000x more than even the next skier and talk shit to try to cut down other skiers? you sure don't have to worry about being a hypocrite when you're 100% negative across the board, do you?
no, if humanity is fucked it's because we in-fight like this rather than addressing the problems we all face together.
im an idiot for even replying to a skierman post but leonardo dicaprio has been involved with climate change work since the 90s and has raised and donated millions and millions of dollars to causes. you guys are way off the ball here
ParryWithAnAYou know you are being a hypocrite for putting another skier down with that post. Just wanted to point that out... Do as I say, not as I do. Right?
Anyways. In some small way you are right. I'm only coming off as a negative Nancy in this internet argument over a post I made, about a post, that was originally a post on Instagram. My bad.
To make up for it I'm going to:
- Make 1 cent donation for every mile I travel in the van. I'm also going to add up last years van travel and donate that. Midterms are coming up soon.
- Donate that money to Democratic candidates in swing states, and those who are in close races with Republicans.
- Ask my sponsors to match me.
- Ask fellow van travelers to do the same.
- Not eat meat during TAFT.
I'm also asking you to do the same. Put some money on the table and backup what you are saying. Or better yet email, DM, call her sponsors, and organizations she works with and ask them to have her do a carbon footprint audit of herself. I can guarantee her "environmental activism" is producing a larger carbon footprint than most Americans.

CLQThe only thing I dislike about this is the fact that, in some way, Caroline Gleich has actually done something for the environment besides making an instagram post.
ParryWithAnAWe might need to agree to disagree on that one. Again the phrase, "Do as I say, not as I do" comes to mind.

CLQOops I didn't mean it that way. I mean't in a, you're actually doing something good for the environment because Caroline Gleich is a slacktivist. So in a way, she did actually get people to help the environment, just probably not in the way she intended.

SofaKingSickthis is great! glad to see something positive come out of this dumb thread. i already donate as i can, eat 80% less meat than i used to, volunteer, etc so at this point in my life im doing all i reasonably can on my modest research salary so i have nothing new to add to the table right now but rest assured we are on the same team here. good stuff man
