School me on tech toes and binding compatibility

It's not the toes that matter for comparability it's the soles. As long as you have a regular alpine sole then you are fine for regular alpine bindings. If you have some sort of rockered hiking sole like wtr or grip walk etc then they don't recommend the regular alpine bindings.

It looks like the replacing the heels and toes on this particular boot give you "walk soles plus" compatible with Sole ID and WTR only. So that doesn't include GripWalk or what?

How many different Boot Sole Norms are there right now?

Upon further research it appears the boots with the tech soles are not compatible with the GripWalk units. I'm thinking now about remounting my ARVs with the Attack 14AT? Or swapping bootsoles once in a while? Get new boots with tech toes for the new skis?

I came across a similar dilemma... ended up going for two boots. Rather than one that is okay at both touring and resort riding, I'm glad I went with a resort boot and a touring boot. I went with the Salomon MTN lab, so I could ride it inbounds and still charge if I'm traveling or don't want to bring both pairs that day.

What bindings are you running on your inbounds skis? Can you give me a quick breakdown on both your setups?

Tour: Salomon Mtn Labs & Moment Deathwish w/ Kingpin 13s + hoping to get a light-light setup for traveling further distance this upcoming spring (looking at the Black Crows Navis with G3 Ions)

If you really want to do the one boot thing, I'd suggest the Lange XT, the Cochise 120/130, or the Atomic Hawx Ultra XTD
(all are pretty light & have tech fittings, but work with WTR/grip walk)

and I'd recommend the Salomon Warden 13, works pretty well with all the weird soles

I think I'm overthinking things though.

I can just ride the shifts and attack 13s inbounds and swap toes if I have a chance to go touring. That should work right? I assume I would need to make some adjustments to the shifts when switching over to tech soles but that's not a big deal.

Easiest thing to do is just only get bindings that are classed as MNC, Multi Norm Certified. The shift is included in that, so you can ski the shift even with a standard alpine boot sole, although obviously wouldnt be able to tour it without pin inserts. Alpine bindings classed as MNC include any Marker bindings usinjg the ID sole and various salomon bindings such as Warden or STH, so there's plenty of good options. And the majority of the high flex freeride/touring hybrid boots will work no problem in any of those, like MTN Lab, Hawx Ultra XTD, Cochise, Head Kore, Ascendant etc etc. One exception would be the new Hoji boot from dynafit because it doesnt have any lugs at the toe which you'd need to ski the shift in Alpine mode.

I'm picking up a MTN Lab/Shift combo for next season which I'm pretty stoked for. Dunno what ski I'll be running them with yet though

so lets clarify here because it seems pretty messy and semi-contradictory if you go to the manufacturers websites. figured this is the best thread to get some compatibility questions out there

grip walk is a rockered sole, ISO 9523. they are not compatible with regular/old alpine bindings (ISO 5355)
gripwalk IS compatible with: alpine bindings ISO 5355 LABELED "GripWalk" / SoleID / MNC /and/ Dual WTR (look/rossi)
WTR is compatible with bindings labeled WTR / SoleID / MNC /and/ Dual WTR
Tyrolia "MBS" and "AT" will work with both as well. "AT" will work with ISO 9523.

GripWalk IS compatible with dual WTR even if it doesn't say it is. Dual WTR is compatible only with gripwalk, WTR and alpine ISO 5355 soles - it will not work with regular ISO 9523 soles.

it seems that GripWalk will work with WTR bindings...BUT, WTR will not work with all GripWalk bindings

that being said, i think pre-2015 bindings without a sliding AFD for WTR do not work with GripWalk
-this could only apply to salomon and atomic...i remember reading this somewhere

i did my research so hopefully that is all correct but this should definitely be confirmed by the gurus of NS and your own research.
