mystery3Back in the day, but then I grew up, got a haircut and shifted to hardcore/metalcore/post hardcore which I still listen to on occasion even at my advanced age.
What do you like? I used to listen to a lot of early cannibal corpse, suffucation, deicide, some of the Scandinavian stuff as well as Sepultura and slayer of course, and a bit of grindcore.
DeebieSkeebies80s thrash like Testament, Slayer, Overkill, Anthrax, First few metallica albums, Exodus, etc. A bunch of other stuff too
Doom metal and a lot of heavy stoner/psych rock. Bands like Electric Wizard, SLEEP, Attalla, Belzebong, Dopelord, Acid King, Monolord, Stoned Jesus, Om, Windhand, Kult of The Wizard, Kyuss, 1000mods, The Sword, All Them Witches, King Buffalo, and waaaay too many more.
The Sword is probably the favorite metal band for me. First albums are heavy as a motherfucker and riff-tastic, and then their last few records are a sorta different sound of just groovy hard rock and some acoustic shit thats really good too.
BigPurpleSkiSuitI enjoy some iron maiden every now and then if I'm angry or hard charging.
getCORKEDFavourite iron maiden song?
BigPurpleSkiSuitPhantom of the opera, but really its that whole album.
satanworshipperThe old stuff is my jam too. Like, who doesn’t listen to fucking slayer?
Thats cool you mention stoner and psych rock! I’ve been into that stuff for quite a bit now. I haven’t listened to the heavier stuff yet, but I do enjoy Queens of the Stone Age and the Flaming Lips.
The Sword is fucking amazing. They are on the list of my favourite bands. That’s pure hard rock right there.
DeebieSkeebiesIf you ever get the chance to see The Sword live, do it! They played a show in SLC with King Buffalo not too long ago that was incredible. They went on at like 10pm and didn't stop playing till nearly 1am, They're encore was like 4 more songs, it was insane, and "High Country" sounds 10000x better live imo. It really turned me around on that album.
If you love Queens of The Stone Age, You'd love Kyuss then. Its josh hommes first group and they're amazing too. Kinda helped pioneer that heavy stoner rock flavor.

Thy Art
Rings of Saturn
Enterprise Earth

Seriously though, it's somewhat subjective and there are a lot of areas of overlap or bands that fit into multiple genres or evolve through several slightly different sounds and move from one genre to another. Take metalcore, the structure is based in punk/hardcore but a lot of it sounds like metal, especially to someone who's not familiar with either genre.
In the end it really makes no difference, if you like it and you think it's metal, rock on.

oldmanskiI have listened to my share through my life, seen many of the bands listed above live. Got introduced to it at a young age in early 80's and have not looked back since. I went through a country music stage for a bit in the early 90's but soon came back to the metal. I wish I still had all my vinyl, cassettes and CD's I purchased through the years but those slowly disappeared through moves and such. Ugh, makes me sick to think of all the music I lost. Thankful for todays technology to allow me to listen to all that stuff still.
Jemsgod I love uncle acid such a unique sound
