DIY Mounting Jig

Aight so how could I do this? I have Pivots and will most likely use only pivots for the next 10 years probably... so naturally it’s gonna be 10x cheaper to make a jig and mount myself than have a shop mount 2 pairs of skis each year (shops around here mount expensive). I saw a YouTube video and the guy mounted his bindings into a quarter inch thick peice of plywood. And I believe he would then use the plywood with the holes already mounted and use that as a jig once he actually mounted? This seems sketch tho because it seems like that peice of ply would be very tough to center perfectly once you put it on the ski. Plus it would also be difficult to mount centered, a few cm back, etc.

Someone help me out here, if you can think of any ways I could build one for cheap that will do the job just fine, or if you’ve made one, drop it below. Thanks.

Forgot to mention... I’ve tried Paper templates before and it didn’t turn out all that well. Plus I don’t trust it a whole lot.

I don’t know too much about jigs and a quick ebay search didn't come up with a pivot specific jig but try sending this seller a message? He notes he's going to be selling off a bunch of jigs and to message him if looking for something specific.

I'm gonna say you should just bite the bullet and get yourself a legit second hand jig if you know you're mounting that many skis. No matter how well you make it there's always going to be issues like you've said, and things like hole drift as you use it repeatedly. That's just me though, I wouldn't want one small thing I did wrong messing up a bunch of skis, then again i'm not the best at that stuff anyway but you could be, so just a thought...

The reason im doing this is because I can’t find actual jigs anywhere. Anywhere online, they’re all sold out.

Get the first pair mounted at a shop, when their dead put a transparent piece of plastic over the holes and trace them, then use the plastic as a jig. Should work until you change boots

this, measure twice, mount on 2x4 a couple times to make sure you get the depth right ect ect, epoxy when you do mount. used to do this for most of my sticks growing up.

the shop i worked at didn't have a wide pivot jig so i used an old racing plate to mount a few pairs of pivots last season. one of them was cast touring and it worked perfectly. i remember seeing leo taillefer using a 2x4 to mount some markers, check his ig for the video. but all you have to do is measure and measure well to get them centered edge to edge.

really? i think paper jigs work fine, i have mounted 2 pairs of pivots before with a paper template and both turned out great. guess it's up to how precise you are.

Update: used some thin cardboard and punched holes in it then used that to mount into a 2 by 4. Worked well. Heel peice seemed like it was angled just a little off, going to try again to see if I can get some diff results. Going to practice this 4 or 5 times and if I’m successful I will mount my skis for good

Use some electrical tape on the drill to stop it from going all the way down. That way it will mimic an actual mounting drill.

I lined up lexan and on a ski and drilled holes over my drilled holes, then drew a bsl center line

This works but if you are doing a lot of skis the mounting bit from SVST is a must. never drill through a ski on accident again (even though its not a huge deal when you do)

So pricey. For just 1 binding type you're out 300 usd + tax + shipping. Could get 15 shop mounts for that price.

Sadly I guess, that only buys you 6 maybe 7 mounts here. What is the residual value of a used jigerex?

Damn! You got some cheap mounts man. Shop mounts here are like 50 normally, and back in south Dakota they were 70.


Get a buddy or 2 or 5 to go in on it...cuts the price a lot for something super easy to share. But I do get what you are saying, pretty pricey upfront

Last time I went to a shop for a mount was maybe a decade ago and it was 20 or 25 bucks Canadian.. I guess it's gone up a lot. I've mounted my own since. Was actually planning on making a nice mounting jig, dunno why I haven't yet since I can do it on a milling machine and make it more precise than you'd ever need it.

That sounds pretty tight.


Anyone tried 3d printing one?? Seems like it would work but I dont know much about 3d printing.
