I was just thinking about this and figured I would share. What do you guys think people’s biggest mistakes are when tryinh to get into skiing? As far as forcing style and not focusing on progression. IMO I hate when people buy a pro model (ex. Magnus) and feel the need to try and ski the same way. Feel free to leave some feedback.
It’s hard to really make mistakes if skiing is your passion and you’re always having fun, right? Everyone has different goals and things they get from skiing, so instead why not ask what is the best thing you learned while learning to ski. If you focus on the positive and not the negative you’re more likely to improve 👊
not taking good care of your gear. seriously, took me like 10 years to figure out that taking care of your ski stuff the right way can make it last like twice as long
I've done a lot of spectating while working day crew in the parks over the years. I've seen a lot of things where I was like oh that's dumb, or you're trying to hard. Then again, at the end of the day, as long as you're enjoying yourself who cares.
There was a phase where I just liked flipping everything. Might just do 3 flips off 3 jumps. I'd spin sometimes too but just liked the feeling. Somebody at mt snow was like, is all you do just backflips? I was like maybe, but they're fun lol.
Mixing it up is great but sometimes you just want to do what you want to do. I just ate a roast beef special at this restaurant by my parents house today before leaving NY again. I've eaten at least 100 of them, but I still go there when I visit, and that's the only thing I want. Maybe that's unreasonable but they're fucking good and I enjoy grabbing them.
As far as style everyone picks somebody to emulate at some point. Sure people develop their own styles but sometimes you see a person ski and go "how that looks sick" and try and incorporate some of what you've seen into your riding.
It wasn't like most of the NS member all invented some crazy new style or tricks. Everything is kind of taking what's out there, and mashing it up in your brain and seeing where your legs take you. It doesn't need to be something new or unique, just something fun.
Sometimes I ride groomers for a chunk of the day and just rid surfy turns. The same kind of turns I do all the time, but they're fucking fun and I love it.
I feel you on the style thing, but I guess at this point I just feel like do whatever the fuck you want, just don't crash into people or stand on the decks of the jumps.
Not tryna criticize the newbs of the park cos I’m one of them, but they ski like their feet aren’t free at all. Like they don’t treat skiing as if it’s just much faster running or something, and you can do so much more and can do spins and stuff without that mental block.
Whenever I started learning some new tricks I would work for the trick all day, do it finally, and immediately work on something else. Paying the price for this a year or two later as my arms are super flaily.

What do you mean? As far as when you are skiing on the hill or in the off-season?
Watching park edits from 2007 and then thinking backseat is the proper way to ski big mountain. Took me a bit to correct it, glad I still have both ACLs

Not working on good dynamic skiing technique outside the park in tandem with park progression. Having good foundational skills will help progress way faster. Having good technique helps with not forcing style: if you understand skiing fundamentals and then try to integrate whatever style or tweaks you like, it's more likely they will coem out as your own additions and finesses. It goes both ways though. Being solid in park often improves all-mountain skills.

I wouldn't even say anything that structured is necessary, although they definitely build some solid fundamentals. Most people wouldn't have the cash to be in a program like those anyway. Just practice skiing fast and consistently in challenging terrain and moguls, and ski with people who are better than you at it, if you can find them. If you can keep it together doing that, chances are you're doing alright. Even looking at a ski technique manual could help, as wack as that sounds. Taking a lesson from a high level/experienced instructor with some freestyle/ big mountain background can help too, for sure.

off season mostly - buying a cheap waxing kit to keep your bases from drying out for cheaper, letting liners dry out properly to avoid mold, how to wash outerwear without being lazy and just throwing them in the wash. actually keeping your bag and shit clean and organized.
i guess there are some on-hill things too, like knowing when its not worth it to take that sketchy early season woods run and fuck up your edges/core, but when i said that earlier, i was mostly thinking of off season stuff
When I was learning 360's 12 years ago I landed on my shoulder and tore it out of my socket. It hurt so badly for a week and i never did anything about ti. Now my shoulder is ok but it's never been and never will be 100%
WORKING at a ski resort as a lift operator at one point sure first tracks is cool, but you know what else is cool?
Actually getting to enjoy the entire pow day and not having to go to other resorts on your days off,
if you wanna ski just ski because sometimes work in the winter can be a drag free pass is cool but you will only need it 1once maybe 2wice a week, I take that back they never check your pass because they all know you so you only use your pass for discounts on food or to serve as ID to get you into the club
