Dalbello Krypton Tongue Stiffness/Sizing

I've got a pair of Krypton 130s on the way to try on, but I had a question about the the tongue stiffness and sizing.

I've read some people saying the stiffer B tongues the Kryptons come with are too soft. Since it seems like A tongues are pretty much non-existent, I was wondering if larger size tongues are stiffer than their smaller tongues at the same "B" level? And if so, are they interchangeable between sizes? I know this was a trick some people have done in the past with FTs to get tongues beyond the 10 level stiffness.

I'm aware there are internal stiffeners you can clip on to the inside to lock the cuff and increase stiffness, but have also heard this takes away from the smooth flexing characterstic of cabrio boots.

Luckily the shop I ordered from contacted Dalbello and said they can order spare tongues if needed once they get a fresh stock of parts in closer to the 18/19 season.

My Krypton Pros with the B tongues, intuition power wraps and a world cup booster strap (without any cuff inserts) are significantly stiffer than my Fischer 140 flex race boots with their stock power strap and liner. However, the tongues do soften up relatively quickly. IMO get 2-4 sets of tongues for the season (depending on how fast they soften up), power wraps or any beefy liner and a WC booster strap and I think you will be happy.

Just to confirm you're saying the tongues permanently soften over time? I've heard they soften in warmer temps but assumed they get stiffer as well in colder temps, but not permanently softer...

To put it in perspective I’m 5 4 135ishh. And yes over time the tongues soften up, they also soften up in warmer temperatures as you said. I should add this clafication tho, even considering the Fischer 140 boots are way softer on an ideal day, It is my guess that my krypton would be of similar flex on a warm day. Fischers vacuum shells have minimal flex difference between warm and cold temperatures (the liners are always cold tho :/).

if I can get my hands on spare tongues, I definitely will. Still wondering if a larger size tongue is stiffer in the same level, and if they'll fit on smaller shells?

Larger size tongues won't fit. If you want stiffer block up the backs, change your forward lean so the blocks engage quicker, add a booster get a stiffer liner. I'd be really surprised if you're over flexing that boot with the B tongues. I'm 6'2'' 240lbs and I don't. You just have to realize it's a progressive flex boot, it's designed to have some flex right away and to get stiffer the farther you flex it. You won't hit a wall right away like in a 2 piece traditional boot. World Cup Boosters and a Intuition Pro Tongue will make that boot stiffer than hell if you need it. Also the boot will feel stiffer the tighter the middle (DynaLink) buckle is tightened as that pulls the tongue towards the lower and upper cuff and gives it less room to deform. There's also some funky stuff you can get into if you've exhausted other options such as gas pedals and adding material to help it engage faster when flexing but that's almost never necessary.

Thanks, mine arrived the other day and finally got to try them on. The B tongues without any of the cuff block inserts felt stiff enough for me, stiffer than my FT with #10 tongues I was on the past 2 seasons. And considering this is in 60-70 F room temps, I'm thinking it should be plenty stiff when Winter comes back. Did some more digging around and some say they were still able to get the smooth tongue flex feel even with the cuff block inserts, so I'm not so hesitant anymore about using the inserts.

@fasa, so do you use the Pro Tongue liners with your Kryps then? If so how does it feel compared to the stock intuition wrap?

The fit of these Kryptons on the other hand... Damn those intuition liners are stiff! Makes my FT intuitions feel like child's play. Def need to bake the liners to get me some more wiggle room in the toes, but I think I'm in the right shell fit (went down a size from my measured mondo, which I did not do with my FTs).

Those pro tongues are about as much stiffer than the stock IDs than the stocks are over your full tilts... They're burly. I don't personally use them in my own but I've put them in a few peoples Krypton Pros (I'm a boot fitter) when they need a lil more stiffness. I did use pro tongues in the Head Hammer 130. They work just fine in a cabrio style boot. When my wraps are done in my Kryptons I may throw them in. They're ceratinly not for the faint of heart though. And they do drop you down in the boot about 3-5mm so it will change the fit a lil bit. Also those blocks in the back won't make the boot less progressive, they just make it engage quicker, so don't worry about that.

This is incorrect. The stock liners are significantly less stiff than “real” pro wraps and they take up far less volume in the boot. Not a marginal difference by any stretch of my imagination

That was exactly my point... That the stock IDs in the Krypton are not nearly as stiff as the aftermarket pro-wrap or pro tongue from intuition... May have worded that weird in my earlier post. What I meant was that the increase in stiffness from a full tilt liner and the stock ID in the krypton is about the same again as going from a stock ID to and after-market pro tongue. As in the pro tongue is quite a bit stiffer than the stock ID...

Do you have the insert blocks for the back (inside) of the shell? They make a huge difference.

why do people not mold intuitions? they'll never mold on their own, your feet don't get hot enough (230+). additionally the nicer intuitions aren't premolded for in store fit, so their shape is pretty far off from the average foot. make sure you have someone do it for you who you trust, i've had to fix so many intuitions that were not properly molded cause people aren't paying attention when they do it or simply don't get them hot enough for a proper molding. additionally if they're left in too long they can shrink, though i've only seen that 4 times in 7 years of bootfitting (2 from the same bozo in cherry creek).

as for the stiffeners, you still get a smooth flex, it just doesn't feel as progressive, more stiff from the onset and with less change the deeper into it you get. there are two spots, so play with them, the lower one still feels pretty "progressive." booster strap is an easy upgrade for a firmer feel to the boot as well.

I got krypton pro 130's...this was my first season on them. They are pretty soft compared to my previous nordica 130's...like way softer. That being said not a bad boot im just not a fan of the 3 piece flex and feel. Wouldn't buy them again personally. But also were only like $200 bucks brand new so no complains.

My season ended well before I got these boots. I just happened to find them on sale in the size I was looking for and pulled the trigger.

I'll definitely play around with all the options, including booster straps.

For now, they are definitely stiffer than my FT First Chair 10s, and if they feel anything like the Head Hammers I demoed, I'll be a happy camper. Def noticed a difference in the burlier build of the Hammers vs the FTs, and yes, I understand the Hammers cuff and lower boot are fixed.

I also tried on a pair of Nordica GPX 130s several times, but the intuition liner and the firmer wrap I was getting on my shins with the Kryps was the deiciding factor for me. Still not ruling out overlap boots in the future by any means.

Obviously its all preference. I have nothing bad to say about the krypton pro's they fit me like a glove out of the box and my feet can stay comfortable all day. The one downside is they dont have replaceable sole's so need to be careful with walking on parking lots / villages...but i do use those cat tracks for the most part of the season.

Im an ex racer and previous boot was nordica patron pro which is in my opinion a stiff 130 while the krypton was more of a soft 130. They arent soft by any means but wouldnt mind a little more oomph in them personally. $200 brand new boots are hard to pass up and dont regret it at all.
