chef_boyardeeIn the video Tanner seems to think that him calling a 65 year old man retarded is basically ok because the meaning of the word has changed, just like how the word "fag" changed in the south park episode he mentioned. I personally think that's bullshit, cause although the n word, for instance, is used today as a word that many black people greet each other with and the meaning of the word has changed, it's still not ok for non-black people to say the word. It's the same with retard. Although many people today use the word to indicate stupidity rather than mental disabilities, you have to be aware that using the word will cause many people to be offended. Considering that 1 in 68 children are diagnosed with autism, I would say that there's a fair amount of people who have a friend or family member affected by such a disability and who will be offended by the use of such a derogatory term, and understandably so.
A grown man like Tanner should be above using such childish insults like retarded. Videos like this really cement the view that many people have of him as an asshole. Not saying he is, cause I don't know him, but bitter rants such as these certainly doesn't reflect him in a good light.

dan4060While he ought to have used a different word than retarded, some of what he said is spot on. I don't ski the park much, but I have seen idiots with their kids cruising around in the landing zone. And I will agree that children are not disciplined enough. And don't get me started on smart phones.
I ski at Mammoth most winter weekends, 2-3 a month. I tend to stay on the upper mountain and chair 22, so I don't see idiocy very much, not too many beginners, but every once in a while at the bottom of the mountain I experience it. One weekend in April I was getting on the lift at Little Eagle, one of the bottom lodges, at around 930 am on my way up the hill. Little Eagle is used by either beginners, or higher level skiers accessing the rest of the mountain. I expect beginners to have difficulty, not their fault, but when I see a complete lack of common sense it is aggravating. Ahead of me in line was a woman who was about 50, she was very overweight and had trouble moving to where the chair was picking up. She was with three other people who were probably her kids, they seemed the right age. As she is moving into loading position her phone rings, so she stops moving forward and takes her phone out. By this time she can't move up to the line in time, so she ends up falling when the chair hits her. I would expect most on this website are comfortable enough on skis to complete this maneuver, but she clearly was not, and should not have attempted it. I am used to having beginners have difficulty loading on Eagle, that is fine, but this idiot decided to take out her phone and caused the lift to stop because she was too dumb. That I have a problem with. When she took her phone out she just stopped moving forward, it was as if she became absorbed by the fact that she had a call and could not concentrate on the world around her. When she got off the lift at the top I explained to her that she had been rude, and to keep her phone in her pocket next time. I skied away before she had a chance to respond, but I could see she was shocked that I was calling her out. I see this kind of behavior more and more. I can't tell you how much more often I have to honk at someone at a red light now compared to a decade ago, most of the time I can see them looking down at their phone, sometimes texting. It is absolutely unacceptable.
So while Tanner could have used some better language, much of what he is ranting about is justified. People ARE addicted to their smart phones. Kids ARE not being given enough discipline. People are often not teaching their children common sense and courtesy.
I surf before work almost every morning, and I see this kind of garbage in the water all the time. I'm not a supporter of localism, I learned to surf in college and I suck at it, but people need to have common sense and etiquette. I remember going down the line on a left last summer on a Saturday morning in Newport, it was about shoulder high. Some guy on the shoulder is paddling in, so I call him off. He keeps digging, looks back and sees me, and STILL tries to catch it. He didn't catch it, so I rode it into the inside. I paddled back out and asked him not to drop in on me, I told him that when someone is on a wave you don't drop in. I could tell by the way he was paddling that he was a beginner, and I did not yell, I just wanted to give him a quick lesson on etiquette before he hurts someone or gets his ass kicked. He responds by telling me to fuck off, and that I don't own the ocean. The guy was not a kid either, he was probably in his late 30's. I told him that it had nothing to do with owning the ocean, that it had to do with common courtesy. When I see people with their kids standing on the knuckle in the park I see the same thing, a lack of courtesy and common sense.
So some of what Tanner is talking about is absolutely on point. I just think he could do a better job with how he presents his opinions.
I met Tanner a few times back when I lived in Squaw around 2002. He used to buy weed from my roommate. He cruised by a few times with Evan Raps and CR. They were all pretty cool kids, none of them acted like they owned the world.

skiermenI feel that. To some people the terrain park is more like an attraction at disney word than a dojo.
